A patient may come to a therapist with many complaints that are early symptoms of Alzheimer s disease or other types of cognitive impairment, and the therapist s first responsibility is to recognize the importance of prompt medical evaluation and treatment. The therapist may also be assisting a patient with mild cognitive impairment and depression, a common co-occurrence. Because medications are likely to be indicated for major depression in Alzheimer s disease, the patient may benefit from the therapist s assistance in learning to cope with mild symptoms.
