The high resistivity of Inconel 600 (11 OjtI 0 8 Dm) demanded the application of this material as a composite with a central aluminum core. The aluminum was totally enclosed in Inconel 600 so that the Inconel was only exposed to sulfur and polysulfides. In a test over more than three years, cells with a composite current collector of this kind suffered from a high capacity decline. Post-test analysis showed that Inconel sustained polysulfide attack with the formation of a duplex nickel and chromium sulfide layer on the current collector surface. [Pg.576]

The strategies explored and defined in the various examples presented open a way for wider application of microwave chemistry in industry. The most important problem for chemists today (in particular, drug discovery chemists) is to scale-up microwave chemistry reactions for a large variety of synthetic reactions with minimal optimization of the procedures for scale-up. At the moment, there is a growing demand from industry to scale-up microwave-assisted chemical reactions, which is pushing the major suppliers of microwave reactors to develop new systems. It was a result of demand from industry in the mid-1960s for an alternative to be found for the expensive traditional synthetic procedures that led to the evolution of phase-transfer catalysis in which hydrophilic anions could be transferred into an organic medium. Several phase-transfer catalysts are available quaternary ammonium, phosphonium and arsonium salts, crown ethers, cryptands and polyethylene glycols. Of these, the quaternary ammonium salts are the most versatile and, compared with the crown ethers, which have many applications, they have the advantage of being relatively cheap, stable and non-toxic [1, 2].
