Phospholipid molecules form bilayer films or membranes about 5 nm in thickness as illustrated in Fig. XV-10. Vesicles or liposomes are closed bilayer shells in the 100-1000-nm size range formed on sonication of bilayer forming amphiphiles. Vesicles find use as controlled release and delivery vehicles in cosmetic lotions, agrochemicals, and, potentially, drugs. The advances in cryoelec-tron microscopy (see Section VIII-2A) in recent years have aided their characterization [70-72]. While most vesicles are formed from double-tail amphiphiles such as lipids, they can also be made from some single chain fatty acids [73], surfactant-cosurfactant mixtures [71], and bola (two-headed) amphiphiles [74]. In addition to the more common spherical shells, tubular vesicles have been observed in DMPC-alcohol mixtures [70]. Polymerizable lipids allow photo- or chemical polymerization that can sometimes stabilize the vesicle [65] however, the structural change in the bilayer on polymerization can cause giant vesicles to bud into smaller shells [76]. Multivesicular liposomes are collections of hundreds of bilayer enclosed water-filled compartments that are suitable for localized drug delivery [77]. The structures of these water-in-water vesicles resemble those of foams (see Section XIV-7) with the polyhedral structure persisting down to molecular dimensions as shown in Fig. XV-11. [Pg.549]

An example of such a product is Sterile Medroxyprogestrone Acetate Suspension used for its contraceptive property. In poorly conducting media or soils, however, the low driving voltage can limit the use of galvanic anodes. Raising the current delivery, which becomes necessary in service, is only practically possible with the help of an additional external voltage. Developments in the USA have led to the availability of terephthalate plasticisers, for example dioctyl terephthalate (DOTP). Whilst these materials are very similar to the corresponding o-phthalate esters they are generally less volatile and are best compared with d-phthalates with one or more carbon atom in the alkyl chain. As with the linear dialkyl phthalates the terephthalates show good fogging resistance. This is a phenomenon in which new cars on storage fields awaiting delivery develop misting on the windows due, apparently, to the volatility of additives in PVC compounds used with the car. [Pg.331]

In addition to the documents that serve product manufacture and installation or service delivery, documents may also be required for maintenance and operation. The product descriptions, handbooks, operating manuals, user guides, and other documents which support the product or service in use are as much a part of the design as the other product requirements. Unlike the manufacturing data, the support documents may be published either generally or supplied with the product to the customer. The design of such documentation is critical to the success of the product, as poorly constructed handbooks can be detrimental to sales. [Pg.252]
