Arsine affects the ability of the blood system to carry oxygen by destroying red blood cells. The lack of oxygen rapidly affects all body tissues, especially the central nervous system. Arsine may also affect the kidneys, liver, and heart. Most deaths related to arsine exposure are believed to be secondary to acute renal failure. Arsine is carcinogenic.

Tight control of diabetes, with reduction of HbAic from 9.1% to 7%, was shown to reduce the risk of microvascular complications overall compared with that achieved with conventional therapy (mostly diet alone, which decreased HbAic to 7.9%). Cardiovascular complications were not noted for any particular therapy metformin treatment alone reduced the risk of macrovascular disease (myocardial infarction, stroke). Epidemiologic analysis of the study suggested that every 1% decrease in the Aic achieved an estimated risk reduction of 37% for microvascular complications, 21% for any diabetes-related endpoint and death related to diabetes, and 14% for myocardial infarction. 

Opiate addiction has also helped spread diseases, such as the human immunodeficiency virus, hepatitis B virus, hepatitis C virus, and tuberculosis among addicts who inject the opiate drugs and share dirty needles. The rate of opiate-associated emergency hospital visits in recent years has significantly increased. Furthermore, the number of deaths related to those opiate overdoses has almost doubled in this period. All of these trends point to the significant social costs associated with opiate abuse in the United States. 

According to a national study undertaken by the DEA, 803 deaths in 31 states in 2000 and 2001 were related to use of oxycodone and another 179 deaths were likely related to oxycodone. Of the 803 total deaths related to the drug, 117 were linked specifically to OxyContin. The study was undertaken in the form of letters sent to 775 medical examiners (MEs). The MEs were asked to supply autopsy reports, blood, and drug test results, and to investigate reports on all deaths caused by or associated with use of oxycodone. 

Although most people who consume Rohypnol in alcohol recover without serious physical consequences, there have been reports of deaths related to the drug. In those cases, death often resulted from breathing difficulties or the inhalation of vomit in a person who has passed out and is unconscious. 

It is interesting to examine how control for various comorbid factors influences the mortality hazard associated with sleep durations. Comorbidities aside, in Cox proportional hazards models for each gender, controlling only for age and hours of sleep, the sample excess fractions (20) of deaths related to sleep durations other than 7 hr were 16.4% for women and 19.4% for men. Cardiovascular Effects. No studies were located regarding cardiovascular effects of various forms of aluminum following acute- or intermediate-duration inhalation exposure in humans. Dilation and hypertrophy of the right side of the heart were reported in male factory workers chronically exposed by inhalation to aluminum flake powder and who eventually died (McLaughlin et al. 1962, Mitchell et al. 1961). The cardiac effects may have been secondary to pulmonary fibrosis and poor pulmonary function. Epidemiological studies of aluminum industry workers failed to identify an increase in deaths related to cardiovascular disease (Milham 1979 Mur et al. 1987 Rockette and Arena 1983 Theriault et al. 1984a).

GHB-related deaths have occurred in several states. In 1999, there were three reported deaths involving GHB in Texas and two in Minnesota. Missouri has reported five GHB-related deaths and two near-deaths in which GHB was used to facilitate rapes. In Florida, during 2000, GHB was detected in 23 deaths and identified as the cause of death in 6 others. Since 1990, the DEA has documented more than 15,600 overdoses and law enforcement encounters and 72 deaths related to GHB.

Within the following few weeks 28 of the 32 acute deaths of exposed employees were judged due to radiation exposure. Thyroid cancer in children under 18 rose from an incidence of 0.5 of 100,000 (1986-1988 baseline) to more than ten times that level (5-8 per 100,000) in Belarus (1993-2002). Dermal absorption has not been characterized in human studies, and there have not been any dermal effects reported from uranium miners, millers, or processors (ATSDR, 1999). Dermal eontaet is not an important route of exposure sinee DU does not pass through the skin into the blood unless there are open wounds or embedded fragments (Harley et al, 1999 WHO, 2001).

Nicotine and the other ingredients in tobacco have been cited as causing a variety of fatal illnesses. In 1972, six deaths related to the use of hexachlorophene in patients with burns were reported to the FDA (23).
