Danger decision-making

Abstract- Not all sites can be remediated by phytoremediation techniques. Sometimes, more conventional methods have to be used. This paper explores some of the decision-making process, and the techniques and costs involved in dealing with high toxicity and dangerous sites. [Pg.119]

Harmful use of alcohol is common and unform-nately often condoned. Such use includes frequent drunkenness, and the use of alcohol when its effects may be dangerous, for example when driving and operating other machinery. Less obvious, but sometimes disastrous, harmful effects may result from errors of judgement in inter-personal relationships and in decision making in general. [Pg.268]

June The Ohio Supreme Court allows a suit against 15 gun manufacturers to proceed. Overturning a lower court decision, it accepts the city s claim that gun marketing practices created a substantial danger by making guns too easily available to criminals and children. [Pg.110]

Men in positions of authority, accustomed to decision-making, and faced with a dangerous epidemic capable of spreading to the civilian population with incalculable consequences, will always take suitable... [Pg.69]

The inclusion of so many cotton pesticides under the Rotterdam Convention underlines the danger these chemicals pose to the world population. However, whilst the treaty aims to facilitate information exchange regarding the release of hazardous chemicals to provide each party with a decision-making process on their import and export and to ensure that chemicals are correctly labeled with information relating to potential health and environmental impacts the treaty does not exist to promote an end to the sale and use of those chemicals it considers dangerous. ... [Pg.25]

The Bhopal disaster was a watershed in the area of environmental policy and legislation worldwide. Suddenly the horror of the industrial model of development became very stark and real. How and where industries were sited and how they dealt with the dangers that they posed to the communities around them became real questions. After the Love Canal saga (see the case study later in this chapter), Bhopal was the one incident that led to worldwide regulation on chemicals and toxicity. Intertwined with all the information was the fact that communities be given information and be included as participants in industry decision making. [Pg.353]

All of these can impinge, directly or indirectly, on the autonomy of patients, and deflect hospital care from the best principles of beneficence for each individual case. Furthermore, Bernard Lo,24 a physician and bioethicist at UCSF, discusses possible pitfalls of ethics committees There can be excessive pressure to reach agreement, impairment rather than improvement of decision making and the broader dangers of Group-think , that is attraction toward consensus overcoming the voicing of independent, and possibly discordant, points of view. [Pg.594]

Risk assessment deseribes the challenges to environmental decision-making today. Included in these challenges are a national tradition of narrowly focusing on separate environmental problems, the danger of deadlock on crucial environmental issues, and a divergence of public and scientific views on what are the most risky environmental problems. [Pg.809]

Medical and ecological systems to support decision-making at the time of an accident or disaster within the boundaries of chemically dangerous industrial objects and adjacent buffer zones refer to innovative research program tools that successfully link information and decision-making. The systems, which are fully adapted to all probable scenarios of chemical accidents or disasters on the premises of 17 chemical facilities in the boundaries of Volgograd have been developed to order of local administration. [Pg.85]
