Group think

Some groups or families are given special names and have certain properties that should be addressed. But first you must understand why elements are put into the same group. Think about a family you know, not a chemical family, but a human family. Children look like their parents. They learn to do things from their parents and do them in the same way. The same holds true for the elements in the families of the periodic table they react the same way (for the most part). As you learned in the last chapter, each element has a certain number of valence electrons. As you will learn in the next chapter, it is the number of valence electrons of an atom that determines its chemical reactivity. Because the elements in a family have the same number of valence electrons, they will have a similar chemical reactivity. For example, Na and K can be compared in electron configuration and ions formed ... [Pg.78]

Minimize unethical conformity and group-think—Peer pressure dominates most teenagers ( All my friends do it. .. ), but adults must resist the slightest unethical behavioral norms. [Pg.1374]

All of these can impinge, directly or indirectly, on the autonomy of patients, and deflect hospital care from the best principles of beneficence for each individual case. Furthermore, Bernard Lo,24 a physician and bioethicist at UCSF, discusses possible pitfalls of ethics committees There can be excessive pressure to reach agreement, impairment rather than improvement of decision making and the broader dangers of Group-think , that is attraction toward consensus overcoming the voicing of independent, and possibly discordant, points of view. [Pg.594]

Dr. Wang and his group think that it will be possible to design even more impact-resistant helmets than the one Felipe Massa was wearing. In addition, one can think of several applications and implications of this research, such as improving the design of helmets used by (American) football players. [Pg.54]

It is also unusual as an example of group-think , where a number of experienced people in a slightly unusual situation persuaded themselves to do something that, with perfect hindsight, seems to be completely crazy. [Pg.195]

By a process of group-think the plant managers and operators somehow convinced themselves that there was no problem, that the coke drum would not contain dangerously hot oil and coke. Possibly they also felt conunercial pressure to make the plant operational again, which might have affected their judgment. [Pg.198]

One of the advantages of having people with different styles of thinking is that it tends to avoid group think. An advantage of bringing in an outsider such as a consultant or someone new to the discussion is that that person may ask questions that help to avoid group think. ... [Pg.551]
