Large drops (De =1 cm) of chlorobenzene will fall through water with a somewhat erratic oscillatory motion (L3). The drop pitches and rolls. The flight is not vertical but is erratically helical in nature. A series of oscillations, accompanied by waves moving over the interface, can cause the drop to drift several inches in a horizontal direction in a range of a foot or two of fall. Such drops can not oscillate violently as described above, due to the damping action of such movement by the sliding side-wise motion of the wobble. Light, sandy, well-drained soil of high electrical resistivity is low in corrosivity and coated steel or bare stainless steels can be employed. In dry air the stability of zinc is remarkable. Once the protective layer of zinc oxide formed initially is complete, the attack ceases. Even under under normal urban conditions, such as those in London, zinc sheet 0 -8 mm thick has been found to have an effective life of 40 years or more when used as a roof covering and no repair has been needed except for mechanical damage. The presence of water does, of course, increase the rate of corrosion when water is present the initial corrosion product is zinc hydroxide, which is then converted by the action of carbon dioxide to a basic zinc carbonate, probably of composition similar to ZnCOj 3Zn(OH)2 . The mechanism of suspension is related to the type of flow pattern obtained. Suspended types of flow are usually attributable to dispersion of the particles by the action of the turbulent eddies in the fluid. In turbulent flow, the vertical component of the eddy velocity will lie between one-seventh and one-fifth of the forward velocity of the fluid and, if this is more than the terminal falling velocity of the particles, they will tend to be supported in the fluid.
