A carbon steel and duplicate sets ot stainless steel and aluminum cylinders were filled with the standard gas and analyzed monthly for seven months ana then bi-monthly to the present time. Dnring this 14 month period, no change has been observed in the concentrations ot any ot the 10 components in any of the five cylinders. Other heavy fuel contaminants are metals (vanadium, nickel, sodium) coming from the crude oil itself or metallic salts (aluminum silicates) coming from catalysts in conversion steps. An important appHcation of MMCs in the automotive area is in diesel piston crowns (53). This appHcation involves incorporation of short fibers of alumina or alumina—siHca in the crown of the piston. The conventional diesel engine piston has an Al—Si casting alloy with a crown made of a nickel cast iron. The replacement of the nickel cast iron by aluminum matrix composite results in a lighter, more abrasion resistant, and cheaper product. Another appHcation in the automotive sector involves the use of carbon fiber and alumina particles in an aluminum matrix for use as cylinder liners in the Prelude model of Honda Motor Co. [Pg.204]

Historically, strontium metal was produced only in very small quantities. Rapid growth of metal production occurred during the late 1980s, however, owing to use as a eutectic modifier in aluminum—silicon casting alloys. The addition of strontium changes the microstmcture of the alloy so that the siUcon is present as a fibrous stmcture, rather than as hard acicular particles. This results in improved ductility and strength in cast aluminum automotive parts such as wheels, intake manifolds, and cylinder heads. [Pg.473]

Pistons may be of segmented construction to permit the use of one-piece wear bands. One-piece wear bands are a requirement in API 618. Pistons have a problem in common with humans—a weight problem. Weight in a piston contributes directly to the compressor shaking forces and must be controlled. For this reason, aluminum pistons are often found in larger low pressure cylinders. Hollow pistons are used but can pose a hazard to maintenance personnel if not properly vented. If trapped, the gas will be released in an unpredictable and dangerous manner when the piston is dismantled. [Pg.68]

Straight-lobe compressor casings, also called housings or cylinders by different manufacturers, are furnished in cast iron by all vendors. There is an optional aluminum construction available for special applications. Inlet and outlet are suitable for a 125 pound standard ANSI flanged connection. [Pg.125]

Rotary compressors are positive-displacement machines. Figure iO-7 shows a typical vane compressor. The operation is similar to that of a vane pump shown schematically in Figure 10-10 of Volume 1, 2nd Edition (Figure 10-9 in 1st Edition). A number of vanes, typically from 8 to 20, fit into slots in a rotating shaft. The vanes slide into and out of the slots as the shaft rotates and the volume contained between two adjacent vanes and the wall of the compressor cylinder decreases. Vanes can be cloth impregnated with a phenolic resin, bronze, or aluminum. The more vanes the compressor has, the smaller the pressure differential across the vanes. Thus, high-ratio vane compressors tend to have more vanes than low-ratio compressors. [Pg.264]

Plastics are no different in this respect than other materials. If steel, aluminum, and ceramics were to be made into a different complex shapes and no prior history on their behavior for that processing shape existed, a period of trial and error would be required to ensure their meeting the required measurements. If relevant processing information or experience did exist, it would be possible for these metallic (or plastic) products to meet the requirements with the first product produced. A schematic view of an extruder is shown in figure 1. The extruder barrel is essentially a ferrous alloy cylinder, with aluminum block heaters attached to the outside. There are several temperature control zones along the length of the extruder. Measurement thermocouples are installed in the extruder barrel itself. Barrel temperature is used to control the temperature of the polymer melt. Energy from the heaters is conducted both radially and axially in the barrel.
