Cyclonic condenser

Polymerization in Hquid monomer was pioneered by RexaH Dmg and Chemical and Phillips Petroleum (United States). In the RexaH process, Hquid propylene is polymerized in a stirred reactor to form a polymer slurry. This suspension is transferred to a cyclone to separate the polymer from gaseous monomer under atmospheric pressure. The gaseous monomer is then compressed, condensed, and recycled to the polymerizer (123). In the Phillips process, polymerization occurs in loop reactors, increasing the ratio of available heat-transfer surface to reactor volume (124). In both of these processes, high catalyst residues necessitate post-reactor treatment of the polymer. [Pg.414]

Of the four commercial processes for the purification of carbon monoxide two processes are based on the absorption of carbon monoxide by salt solutions, the third uses either low temperature condensation or fractionation, and the fourth method utilizes the adsorption of carbon monoxide on a soHd adsorbent material. AH four processes use similar techniques to remove minor impurities. Particulates are removed in cyclones or by scmbbing. Scmbbing also removes any tars or heavy hydrocarbon fractions. Acid gases are removed by absorption in monoethanolamine, hot potassium carbonate, or by other patented removal processes. A venturi scrubber is a venturi-shaped air passage with water introduced just ahead of or into the venturi throat. The liquid-gas contact is at a maximum in the venturi throat. The relative velocity between gas and liquid aerosol droplets is high, with the gas velocities in the range of 50-100 m/s. The particles are conditioned in the throat, and condensation is the important collection mechanism. After the particles in the gas have been deposited on droplets, a comparatively simple device such as a cyclone collector can be used to collect the wetted dust. [Pg.1247]

Condensation occurs when air temperatures cool. The cooling occurs in one of two ways. Either the air vapor cools as it rises and expands or as it comes into contact with a cool object such as a cold landmass or an ice-covered area. Air rises for several reasons. It can be forced up as it encounters a cooler, denser body of air, or when it meets mountains or other raised land masses. It can rise as it meets a very warm surface, like a desert, and become more buoyant than the surrounding air. Air also can be forced to rise by storms—during tornadoes particles of air circling to the center of a cyclone collide and are forced up. When the water vapor collides with a cold object, it can become fog, dew, or frost as it condenses. Sometimes insufficient differential across the regenerated catalyst slide valve is not due to inadequate pressure buildup upstream of the valve, but rather due to an increase in pressure downstream of the slide valve. Possible causes of this increased backpressure are an excessive pressure drop in the Y or J-bend section, riser, reactor cyclones, reactor overhead vapor line, main fractionator, and/or the main fractionator overhead condensing/cooling system. [Pg.242]

The BP Chemicals polymer cracking process is based at Grangemouth in Scotland and uses mixed plastics as the raw material. The reactor uses a fluidised bed which operates at 500 °C in the absence of air, and under these conditions the plastics crack thermally to yield hydrocarbons. These vaporize and are carried away from the bed with the fluidising gas. Solid impurities such as metals from PVC stabilisers accumulate in the bed or are carried away in the hot gas to be captured by a cyclone further along in the plant. PVC decomposes to HCl and this is neutralized on a solid lime absorbent to yield CaCl2 which is disposed of in landfill. The purified gas is cooled to condense most of the hydrocarbon which can be employed as commercially useful distillate feedstock. The light hydrocarbons which are less easy to condense are compressed, reheated and recycled as fluidising gas. [Pg.167]

In a fluidized bed reactor, entrained particles leaving in a dilute phase stream are conventionally and desirably either partially or wholly condensed into a bulk stream and returned to the bed via a centrifugally driven cyclone system. At equilibrium, or when steady state operation is attained, any particle loss rate from the cyclones, as well as the remaining bed particle size distribution, are functions of (a) the rate of any particle attrition within the system and (b) the smallest particle size that the cyclone system was designed to completely collect (i.e., with 100% efficiency), or conversely the largest size which the system cannot recover. After the pyrolysis gas stream passes through a cyclone and removes entrained particles, it is quenched in a tower to condense the final oil products or CDL . Since cyclone filters can operate at elevated temperatures, the sensible heat in the product gas can be retained. Cyclone filters also remove condensed tars and alkali material from the gas stream, although the vaporized forms of those constituents remain in the gas stream. In practice, the separation of significant amounts of tars from the gas stream may be done sequentially by first removing particulates at higher temperatures, where tars remain vaporized. Vacuum sublimation is a development of simple sublimation, which is particularly useful if the pressure at the triple-point is lower than atmospheric, where the transfer of vapour from the vaporiser to the condenser is enhanced by the increased driving force attributable to the lower pressure in the condenser. Iodine, pyrogallol, and many metals have been purified by vacuum sublimation processes in which the exit gases from the condenser are usually passed through a cyclone or scrubber to protect the vacuum equipment and to minimise product loss. [Pg.881]
