The varnish on a modern painting ( Mont Saleve by Alexandre Perrier, 1916, private collection) showed a mass spectrum (Figure 5.19b) almost identical to that of Ketone Resin N. The use of a cyclohexanone resin as a picture varnish seems uncommon because copolymers such as AW2 were preferred by conservators [62]. An investigation into cyclohexanone resins by direct temperature-resolved MS (DTMS) is reported in the literature [22, 64]. Similar mass spectrometric patterns were achieved with masses accurately reflecting the values expected for the oligomers. 

One report concerning five patients with contact dennatitis caused by a cyclohexanone resin made no attempt to identify the sensitizer (Bruze et al., 1988), while a report of one patient indicated that the patient was reacting to cyclohexanone itself (Sanmartin De la Cuadra, 1992).

Cyclohexanone is used in the production of adipic acid for making nylon in the preparation of cyclohexanone resins and as a solvent for nitrocellulose, cellulose acetate, resins, fats, waxes, shellac, rubber, and DDT. 

Cyclohexanone resin is made by polymerizing the ketone, with or without aldehydes, by heating under pressure with alkali.

Since a typical product of these condensations contains about three hydroxy groups, one carbonyl group, one methoxy group, and one other ether group, and since the degree of polymerization is six, polycyclic structures must also be formed in this reaction. Cyclohexanone resins, which are almost as colorless as water, are light and heat stable. 

Plastics of less dermatological importance are cou-marone-indene polymers, cellulose polymers and cyclohexanone resins. It is not entirely known if the monomers, additives or impurities are the cause of dermatitis in the reported cases (Bruze et al. 1988 Heine and Laubstein 1990).

Cyclohexanone resin (C-R) can be added to increase the hardness and water resistance of any paint but is most often used in floor paints (Bruze et al. 1988a). A paint can contain 5% C-R. There are several C-Rs from various manufacturers.

Used as a polyvinyl chloride (PVC) solvent, cyclohexanone caused contact dermatitis in a woman manufacturing PVC fluidotherapy bags. Cyclohexanone probably does not cross react with cyclohexanone resin. A cyclohexanone-derived resin used in paints and varnishes caused contact dermatitis in painters. 

Beeswax has been used for consolidation, like paraffin wax, and as a matting agent for varnishes. This latter addition appears to have a welcome side-effect of reducing the oxidation of cyclohexanone resin varnishes (Raft, 1985).
