Cutlery

Calcined aluminas are also used for polishing appHcations by mixing into polishing compounds in the form of paste or suspensions. Polishing aluminas are used to alter the surfaces of metals, plastics, glass, and stones in the manufacture of cutlery, automobiles, computers, furniture, eyewear, semiconductors, and jewelry. Polishing aluminas are also used to coat surfaces, such as video tapes (1). [Pg.162]

One thinks of aluminium as a cheap material - aluminium spoons are so cheap that they are thrown away. It was not always so. Napoleon had a set of cutlery specially made from the then-new material. It cost him more than a set of solid silver. [Pg.8]

The improved physical and mechanical properties of the wood-plastic composites lead to a diversity of applications, e.g., automotive parts, furniture, construction (e.g., building panel, flooring veneers), toys, cutlery handles, industrial pattern, sports equipment, musical... [Pg.581]

Major uses of the ferritic steels have been on motor vehicles as trim and in domestic equipment such as cutlery and hollow ware, but use has also been made in refrigerators, washing machines and on sinks and similar fittings. Some types would no doubt find much wider application in the chemical field and other fields where their superior corrosion resistance would be a considerable advantage if it was not for the fact that the austenitic types have advantages (sometimes considerable) in fabrication. However, the availability of the low interstitial weldable types and the super ferritics is increasing in scope. [Pg.557]

The hardness of an enamel surface is an important property for such items as enamelled sink units, domestic appliances, washing machine tubs which have to withstand the abrasive action of buttons, etc. On Moh s scale most enamels have a hardness of up to 6 (orthoclase). There are two types of hardness of importance to users of enamel, viz. surface and subsurface. The former is more important for domestic uses when one considers the scratching action of cutlery, pans, etc. whereas subsurface hardness is the prime factor in prolonging the life of enamelled scoops, buckets, etc. in such applications as elevators or conveyors of coal and other minerals. [Pg.739]

Various other disposable products have been developed from poly(HASCL). Using common techniques, fibers and non-woven fabrics have been manufactured. These materials would be very suitable for use in sanitary napkins and diapers [21, 115, 116]. Other typical single-use products include disposable razors and cutlery and were produced from molded poly(HASCL). [Pg.272]

In automatic dishwashers, amount of dirt on crockery and cutlery can be measured with a radar sensor [87] or with a device that uses the reflectivity of an integrated surface [88]. Thus, the load of the washing liquor with soil and detergency can be measured. [Pg.109]

It is also possible to protect iron against corrosion by forming an alloy with a different metal. Stainless steel is an alloy of iron that contains at least 10% chromium, by mass, in addition to small quantities of carbon and occasionally metals such as nickel. Stainless steel is much more resistant to corrosion than pure iron. Therefore, stainless steel is often used for cutlery, taps, and various other applications where rust-resistance is important. However, chromium is much more expensive than iron. As a result, stainless steel is too expensive for use in large-scale applications, such as building bridges. [Pg.548]

Genpak, a plastic products manufacturer, and Mobil are in the process of opening and operating one of the first plants to recycle polystyrene foam items such as food containers, cups, and cutlery. The materials are being collected from Massachusetts schools and institutions by New England CRInc, a major reclamation firm and recycled materials end-use manufacturer. The plant has a capacity to recycle 3 million lb per year of polystyrene resin, which will be reused by the companies or sold to producers of insulation, fence posts, and flower pots. The new company is expecting a profit by 1992. [Pg.49]

Polystyrene (PS) is best known as a foam in the form of cups, trays, and food containers. In its rigid form it is used in cutlery. [Pg.51]

Silver combines with sulfur to form a black compound, silver sulfide. That is why silver cutlery turns black when it comes into contact with egg, or certain green vegetables, that contain traces of sulfur. [Pg.13]

General-purpose polystyrene is extruded either clear or embossed for room dividers, shower doors, glazings, and lighting applications. Injection molding of impact polystyrene is used for household items, such as flower pots, personal care products, and toys. General-purpose polystyrene is used for cutlery, bottles, combs, disposable tumblers, dishes, and trays... [Pg.1355]
