Current literature searches

Recently published scientific papers are not usually accessible using MEDLINE or similar systems. To keep up to date, it is necessary either to thumb through the title pages of current issues of the scientific journals or, where these are available, to access journals on-line. Alternatively, the following current awareness titles can be used Current Contents and Reference Update. 

These are published weekly, and they list the titles of almost all biochemical papers published in scientific journals Current Contents is published in paper and diskette versions, and Reference Update as a diskette. In the diskette version, the abstracts of papers can also be viewed, if available. The diskette versions also allow literature searches to be carried out using keywords, combinations of keywords, authors and journal titles in a similar way to MEDLINE searches.

The definition of a drug differs between dictionaries and among the various professional specialisms. The Scientific World at http //www.thescientihcworld.com/ offers literature searching through SciBase, a collection of databases of scientific, technical, and medical research literature. SciBase currently covers more than 19 million documents published since 1965 in more than 30,000 journals. SciBase content is derived from databases created by the National Library of Medicine (MEDLINE), the British Library, BIOSIS, and PASCAL, as well as CAB ABSTRACTS. Abstracts are sometimes available free and individual articles are available for purchase. 

With the increasing number of publications on block copolymer micelles (a database literature search with these three associated keywords already gives more than 500 references), an exhaustive description of all previous works would not be possible in the framework of the present review. This contribution has rather as its purpose giving a general overview about block copolymer micelles for the nonspecialist and will therefore try to answer such practical questions as how does one prepare block copolymer micelles How does one characterize them What are the different types of structures that can be formed How can we predict them How does one tune the morphology of these micelles These basic questions and the corresponding answers will be illustrated by selected examples. Then, we will focus on the new directions that are currently implemented in this field. 

As with chemical synthesis, the first step when prospecting for a particular biotransformation is to perform a literature search to check whether a suitable precedent has been described. Extensive technical literature resources in the public domain provide both examples of specific enzyme-catalysed reactions and descriptions of transformations where enzyme activity is inferred if not explicitly described. To determine Sb in marine sediments by ETAAS, a direct method was developed based on quantitating the analyte in the liquid phase of the slurries (prepared directly in autosampler cups). The variables influencing the extraction of Sb into the liquid phase and the experimental setup were set after a literature search and a subsequent multivariate optimisation procedure. After the optimisation, a study was carried out to assess robustness. Six variables were considered at three levels each (see Table 2.13). In addition, two noise factors were set after observing that two ions, which are currently present into marine sediments, might interfere in the quantitations. In order to evaluate robustness, a certified reference material was used throughout, BCR-CRM 277 Estuarine Sediment (guide value for Sb 3.5 0.4pgg ). Table 2.13 depicts the experimental setup.

This theoretical example of a QSAR assessment is presented to exhibit FDA s current approach to using S AR as a tool in the safety evaluation of substances proposed for use as food contact materials. If anthrafurin (1,6-dihydroxy anthraquinone CASRN 117-12-4 Fig. 7.3) were expected to be an impurity in a food contact material, an immediate initial concern would be raised due to reports in the literature of positive results in the bacterial reverse mutation assay and other in vitro genetic toxicity tests. A literature search did not identify relevant carcinogenicity data for anthrafurin. 

Contemporary science, particularly the biosciences, is afflicted by a flood of information that can only be coped with by focusing one s interests and exploiting modern methods of literature searching. literature searches are essentially of two types retrospective, and current awareness. In the former case, searches will usually be based on printed or CD-stored versions of commercial information services in the latter, computer-based literature searches are the method of choice.
