Methods (25,26) to iacrease the ratio of the desired a-isomer (1) versus the unsweet -isomer [22839-61-8] (3) exist and are proprietary. The isomers can be separated by subjecting the solution of the final step to hydrochloric acid. The desired a-isomer hydrochloride salt crystallines out of the solution the P-isomer remains. Drying of the poly(vinyl alcohol) is critical to both the color and solubiHty of the final product. Excessive drying temperatures result in high product color and an increase in the crystallinity, which in turn reduces the solubiHty of the product. Drying is initially subjected to a flash regime, where the solvent not contained within the particles is flashed off. This first phase is foUowed by a period where the rate is controUed by the diffusion rate of solvent from the poly(vinyl alcohol) particles. Because the diffusion rate falls as the material dries, complete drying is not practical. The polymer is therefore generally sold at a specification of 95% soHds. [Pg.485]

The melt-spinning process used to convert mesophase pitch into fiber form is similar to that employed for many thermoplastic polymers. Normally, an extruder melts the pitch and pumps it into the spin pack. Typically, the molten pitch is filtered before being extruded through a multi-holed spinnerette. Liquid crystal polymers (LCP) are a recent arrival on the plastics materials scene. They have outstanding dimensional stability, high strength, stiffness, toughness and chemical resistance all combined with ease of processing. LCPs are based on thermoplastic aromatic polyesters and they have a highly ordered structure even in the molten state. When these materials are subjected to stress the molecular chains slide over one another but the ordered structure is retained. It is the retention of the highly crystalline structure which imparts the exceptional properties to LCPs. [Pg.12]
