Mixed cropping

Method 2. Intimately mix 99 g. of pure phthahc anhydride and 20 g. of urea, and place the mixture in a 1 litre long-necked, round-bottomed flask. If desired, the phthahmide may be recrystalhsed from 1200 ml. of methj lated spirit the first crop consists of 34 g. of m.p. 234°, but further quantities may be recovered from the mother hquor. [Pg.771]

Mix 42 5 g. of acetone cyanohydrin (Section 111,75) and 75 g. of freshly powdered ammonium carbonate in a small beaker, warm the mixture on a water bath FUME CUPBOARD) and stir with a thermometer. Gentle action commences at 50° and continues during about 3 hours at 70-80°. To complete the reaction, raise the temperature to 90° and maintain it at this point until the mixture is quiescent (ca. 30 minutes). The colourless (or pale yellow) residue solidifies on coohng. Dissolve it in 60 ml. of hot water, digest with a little decolourising carbon, and filter rapidly through a pre-heated Buchner funnel. Filter off the white crystals with suction, drain well, and then wash twice with 4 ml. portions of ether this crop of crystals of dimethylhydantoin is almost pure and melts at 176°. After a short period the mixture turns red-brown and at the end of the reaction the dark semi-solid mass is poured into 200 ml of water and extracted with two 100 ml portions of ether. The ethereal extracts are washed twice with equal portions of 5 % sodium hydroxide and water, dried and the ether evaporated. The red sirupy residue is mixed with 10 ml of methanol and a brown solid separates immediately. After standing for 1 hr the solid is removed by filtration and washed with methanol. A second crop is obtained upon concentration of the filtrate. The combined crops are recrystallized twice from methanol to give (70) as white needles mp 124-125° yield 2.8 g (58 %). [Pg.431]

The concentrate was treated with dry acetone (22 liters), the mixture well mixed, and then filtered to remove precipitated solid impurities. Further dry acetone (4 liters) was added to the filtrate, then the product started to crystallize slowly.
