The process was then developed on a closed loop of nitrogen, circulating in three different zones, thus reducing the nitrogen consumption to zero during continuous operation. 

Worldwide industrial nitrogen consumption declined by an estimated 7% between 1984 and 1996 (from about 11,500 tonnes to about 10,750 tonnes of nitrogen).
