Mixing element

In cases where an increased mixing ability in the serew is required, there are two potential solutions to add mixing elements or to use an extended screw design. 

Where higher levels of mixing are desired, mixing elements help create a more homogeneous melt as far as the distribution of temperature and filler is coneemed. 

The loss of pressure in mixing elements should be kept as small as possible, as every loss of pressure leads to a reduetion in plasticising quality. A mixing element must therefore be designed as follows

Some units ean be adapted for solid-solid blending. The residenee time in the units ean be varied or adjusted, whieh makes them suitable for eertain types of reaetions. Figure 7-18 shows a eross-seetion of a flanged Kenies statie mixer with four helieal mixing elements, and Table 7-9 lists the eharaeteristies of statie mixers.

Statie mixers, as reviewed in Chapter 7, eontain mixing elements enelosed in a tubular housing through whieh radial mixing is aehieved. They redistribute fluid aeross the flow ehannel and eonsequently rearrange temperature and eomposition distributions. They are often used to promote mixing in laminar flow systems thus having a pro-nouneed effeet on the RTD.

Figure 7.29 shows a Sulzer type SMX static mixer where the mixing element consists of a lattice of intermeshing and interconnecting bars contained in a pipe 80 mm diameter. It is recommended for viscous materials in laminar flow. The mixer shown is used in food processing, for example mixing fresh cheese with whipped cream.

The continued development of new single-source molecular precursors should lead to increasingly complex mixed-element oxides with novel properties. Continued work with grafting methods will provide access to novel surface structures that may prove useful for catalytic apphcations. Use of molecular precursors for the generation of metal nanoparticles supported on various oxide supports is another area that shows promise. We expect that the thermolytic molecular precursor methods outlined here will contribute significantly to the development of new generations of advanced materials with tailored properties, and that it will continue to provide access to catalytic materials with improved performance.
