Costs program start

All pollution prevention programs start the same - with an audit. The objective of an audit is to gather information aimed at developing a baseline description of the operations. Once we understand how much the costs of compliance to air and other pollution media are, then we can apply engineering tools and management practices to reduce these costs.

Tracking the financial performance of the initial 11 hospitals during the first 3 years of the program yields the following composite example a hospital of 225 beds was found to have equipment service costs of 540,000 before program start-up. Sixty-three percent of these initial costs (or 340,000) was for the maintenance of the hospital s x-ray and CT scanner systems. Three years later, annual service... 

The final steps in the program start with a detailed economic analysis of each feasible method. The installed cost for each alternative must be established and compared to the resultant advantages as a result of savings is energy. 

In a sense, this project was a supply chain "partnership," with multiple firms contributing their development skills to different components of solar cell systems. The program had a cost goal of " 1 per peak watt" of solar cell capacity. When the program started, solar cell systems were selling in the area of 10 to 20 a peak watt. This was intended to include a reasonable profit for solar cell producers. The goal centered on what was considered competitive with conventional generation. 

The impact of loss of tax credits, loss carry forward, and other tax benefits should be studied. Such things as start-up problems that increase the first year s operating costs and reduce the production should also be studied. With a good economic computer program, such as described earlier, all of these sensitivity analyses can be made in an afternoon. 

To date, there have been more than 1500 attendees and more than 500 technical papers or presentations delivered at these conferences. A critical mass of researchers, engineers, and scientists developed through the INVEN1 program in Finland, which started in 1991. These activities have expanded to include scientists, engineers, and practitioners from some 18 countries as part of the COST Action Program. 

In the last twenty odd years, almost all nuclear endeavors in the U.S. have run into bureaucratic and litigious delays, making their schedules and costs unpredictable. In addition to reactor construction, there are the bureaucratic delays in the waste repository programs. Another example is the attempt to build a new uranium enrichment plant in the state of Louisiana, a plant which uses advanced technology demonstrated in several countries in Europe. Licensing started over seven years ago and is still held up by issues without relevance to technology or safety. It is approaching the point where the delays, and costs may lead to the abandonment of a potential asset... 

From this time on, and after further progress made by Haber in the year 1909, the aim of C. Bosch and his associates in the B. A. S. F. was to transform Haber s findings into an economic technical large-scale process. One of the main points in this program was the replacement of the costly osmium and uranium catalysts used by Haber by equally effective, but less sensitive and commercially acceptable materials. The catalytic laboratory experiments which were now started on a new basis in the B. A. S. F. were, following Haber, carried out at a pressure of about 100 atmospheres.
