Parallel plates arc corrugated (like roofing material) with the axis of corrugations parallel to the direction of flow. The plate pack is inclined at 45° and bulk water flow is forced downward. The oil sheet rises upward, counter to water flow, and is concentrated in the (op of each corrugation. When oil reaches the end of the plate pack, it is collected in a channel and brought to (he oil/water interface. 

Cross-flow devices. Equipment manufacturers have modified the CPI configuration for horizontal water flow perpendicular to the axis of plate corrugations. This allows plates to Lie installed at a steeper angle to facilitate sediment removal and enables the plate pack to be more conveniently packaged in a pressure vessel. The latter advantage is critical if gas blowby through an upstream dump valve could cause relief problems in an atmospheric tank.

The above requirements are to some extent contradictory, which has led to the proposition of a large number of different catalyst shapes and arrangements. However, only a few of these have proved really effective in practical operation. Suitable catalyst forms and arrangements include random packings of spheres, solid cylinders, and hollow cylinders, as well as uniformly structured catalyst packings in the form of monoliths with parallel channels, parallel stacked plates, and crossed, corrugated-plate packets (Fig. 3).

Width of the plate (w) is measured from inside to inside of the channel gasket. If not available, use the tear-sheet drawing width and subtract two times the bolt diameter and subtract another 50 mm. For depth of corrugation ask supplier, or take the compressed plate pack dimension, divide by the number of plates and subtract the plate thickness from the result. The number of passages (Np) is the number of plates minus 1 then divided by 2. 

Parallel plate interceptors, such as CPIs (corrugated plate interceptors) and cross-flow separators, can be effective at removing suspended solids from water. However, the solids tend to cling to the plates and plug the plate pack. For this reason, parallel plate interceptors are not normally used to remove large quantities of solids from water.
