The most efficient system devised by Monsanto uses electrodes fabricated from carbon steel plate, electro-coated on one face with cadmium. These are stacked in parallel so that the electrolyte can be pumped through the gap between successive plates. Overall tire system forms a series of electrochemical cells with a cadmium cathode and a carbon steel anode. Each plate of metal forms the cathode of one cell and the anode of the next in the stack. Electric current is passed across the stack. The electrolyte contains phosphate and borate salts as corrosion inhibitors, EDTA to chelate any cadmium and iron ions generated by corrosion together with hex-amethylenebis(ethyldibutylammonium) phosphate to provide the necessary telraal-kylammonium ions. A great number of chiral TTFs have been prepared [31,32], and some of their charge transfer salts have been crystallised. The 7r-donor 1 can be elec-trocrystallised to give a salt 12 PF6, which has a conductivity of 5 2 1 cm 1 at room temperature and metallic behaviour when cooled down [33]. While the structure of the crystals is chiral, the structure of this salt and other related ones [34] has an essentially achiral stack of donor molecules, which are pseudo-centrosymmetric [35]. Nuvera will design, build, test, and deliver a 15 kilowatt electrical (kWe ) direct current (DC) fuel cell power module that will be specifically designed for stationary power operation using ethanol as a primary fuel.
