Specifications include dimensions of length, width, and depth, in that order (Fig. 21-40 ). When boxes are set up and closed by automatic equipment, dimensional tolerances become critical. Cartons are shipped knocked down to the user from plants located in all industrial centers. Because order lead time is 4 to 6 weeks, inventories of empty boxes require considerable space. A useful booklet describing all aspects or corrugated box designs and materials is the Fiber Box Handbook available from The Fiber Box Association, 2850 Gulf Road, Rolling Meadows, IL 60008. 

The substitution of recycled fibre-based boxboard for foodstuff and from corrugated boxes as transport packaging to virgin fibre-based products is impossible due to insufficient availability of fibres and of paper and board production capacity. 

Newsprint, books, tissue, corrugated boxes, bags, cigarette paper, food containers, plates, wallpaper, disposable clothing... 

The objectives in the final stage of the total papermaking system are to improve the paper surface, to reduce rolls and sheets in size, to modify paper for special properties, such as coat or emboss, to convert to finished products, such as bags and corrugated boxes, and to package for shipping. 

Puff pastry shortening can be extruded in flat sheets or printed in 2-kg or 4.5-kg (5- or 10-lb) blocks. It is usually provided in corrugated boxes containing several sheets or slabs with paper sheets between the slabs to prevent them from sticking together. 

Linpac, Recycle Paper Mill, Cowpens, South Carolina The first full-scale commercial pressurized ozone membrane filtration system was tested and installed in the Linpac recycle paper mill in Cowpens, South Carolina (Table 35.1) for TDS removal [50]. The mill produces linerboard and medium for the production of corrugated boxes from an OCC and mixed office waste (MOW) furnish. The mill has no liquid discharge stream. 

Many U.S. businesses have made the decision to receive their supplies and ship their products in reusable plastic shipping containers (RPSCs) rather than singleuse corrugated boxes. Over a period of two years, the Ford Motor Company has eliminated more than 150 million pounds of wood and cardboard packaging that would have gone to a landfill by asking its suppliers to use returnable plastic... 

Two areas of major interest in 1955 were paper antiskid and investment castings. Wilson (19) used colloidal silica to increase the friction between paper surfaces. In this application (Figure 2), the silica sol is typically diluted to 1-7% as silica solids and then applied to multiwall bags, corrugated boxes, and linerboards. Various methods of applying the silica sol were used. Typical applicators were sprays, segmented applicator rollers, knife blades, full roll coaters, sponges, and brushes. 

Adhesive-coated expanded PS shapes have been used as an alternative to foam-inplace polyurethane systems (see Section 13.1.3). The shapes are deposited into a corrugated box, covered with a release film, the product added, another sheet of release film put in place, and the carton filled with the adhesive-coated shapes. When the water-based adhesive dries, a pair of resilient cushions surrounds the product.
