Corrosive properties gasoline

Some organic and mineral acids (sulfuric, hydrochloric and acetic acids), alkali and salts (table salt, chloride ion, etc.) can be used as electrolytes. The electrolytes can form the insoluble products which reduce stability of the protection layer or promote their destruction. Electrolytes as additives are applied extremely rarely because of their high price and, particularly, their corrosive properties as it affects the separators. The non-electrolytes are organic substances which are capable of dissolving the protective film on the water droplets and reducing the viscosity of petroleum. This leads to the acceleration of the water droplets. This type of additive can be gasoline, acetone, alcohol, benzene, phenol, etc. Non-electrolytes are not used in industry because of their high price. [Pg.229]

A recent application of this type of fluid is assistance in the removal of ingested salt spray from jet aircraft compressors and the neutralisation of corrosive effects. Other types of water-displacing fluids are claimed to have fingerprint neutralising properties or to be suitable for use on electrical equipment. Some oil-type materials serve temporarily as engine lubricants and contain suitable inhibitors to combat the corrosive products of combustion encountered in gasoline engines. [Pg.758]

Corrosion Inhibitor - helps prevent rusting of metal engine components. Also, corrosion inhibitors provide a protective film on metal surfaces to aid in improving the lubricating properties of jet fuel. The requirements for jet fuels stress a different combination of properties and tests than those required for aviation gasoline (ASTM D-1655). Transport of gasoline and other refined products in steel pipelines may result in corrosion products that can create a product contamination problem. Internal corrosion of the pipeline can also have an adverse effect on pipeline capacity. Corrosion results from condensation of a water film on the pipe wall plus dissolved air or SRB in the product. Corrosion control is commonly achieved by adding a corrosion inhibitor. Evaluation of inhibitor performance can be done using NACE Test Method for Antirust Properties of Cargoes in Petroleum Product Pipeline (TM0172). Epoxy esters generally possess adhesion, chemical and UV resistance, and corrosion protection properties that are somewhere between those of alkyds and epoxies [21].
