In the electronics industry, silane is widely used for epitaxial deposition of single-crystal films and for the production of polycrystalline silicon. Important features of silane are that deposition temperatures are relatively low, 1472°F to 1832°F (800°C to 1000°C), and no corrosive by-products are formed. [Pg.594]

The smokeless powders were found to be much safer to manufacture than black powder, were more energetic per gram than black powder, and produced essentially 100% gas products with a minimum of smoke (and no corrosive solid products) when ignited. They burned much slower than black powder at standard atmospheric pressure, a safety feature in manufacturing. The corrosion resistance of lithium electrodes in contact with aprotic organic solvents is due to a particular protective film forming on the electrode surface when it first comes in contact witfi tfie solvent, preventing further interaction of the metal with the solvent. This film thus leads to a certain passivation of lithium, which, however, has the special feature of being efiective only while no current passes through the external circuit. The passive film does not prevent any of the current flow associated with the basic current-generating electrode reaction. The film contains insoluble lithium compounds (oxide, chloride) and products of solvent degradation.
