Assess your current organization s total culture. This is done as part of the core competency assessment and vision statement process. 

Eastman Kodak has identified 10 core competencies and developed a process for their management and utilization within the company (29). Similarly, Eaton Corporation selected seven core technical competencies, ranked them in importance, assessed their importance vs the known state-of-the-art for the industry, and developed action plans to extend the life of each (30). Eaton subsequently found the company could bring to market products designed with proven building blocks, thus minimizing risk and the need for additional capital equipment. In addition, the competencies were found to be reservoirs of proprietary advantage that had not previously been put to work. 

During the development of the proposal, the process owner should consider requesting subject matter experts to assist with the development of the problem statement, risk assessment, and cost avoidance or savings. Many times a process owner s core competencies align closely with the process but may lack business or project management skills. The process owner may need assistance to clearly articulate to the leadership what the benefits are to accept the proposed change versus the risks for not adopting the proposal.

The authors intend this book to be useful for several audiences industry experts, managers, students, researchers, and software developers. The concepts and methods outlined within CM preparation are intra-organi-zational, meaning that they were solely applied to the company s situation and its environment. A further inter-organizational assessment can be conducted by applying the concepts to supply chain components within different companies. The given methods can be applied analogically. By doing so, the core competencies within the supply chain of the company and the competencies of the competitor s supply chain can be assessed. 

We used our computationally based model to design and assess a series of chiral Rh(II) carboxylates. It was quickly apparent that designs based on simple mono carboxylates were too flexible—there was never an unequivocal energy difference between the two competing diastereomeric transition states. Assessment criteria for organisation are summarised in Fig. 22.4. The first level is to set up a project-oriented organisation. An advanced level of project management implementation is a request for the second level. For the highest level it is necessary to have efficient cooperation with external teams and suppliers. A project organisation also needs to support smooth transfer of a developed product into production. There should be competent staff to take over the new product into production and experts from the core team need to be at least part-time available in the transitional period after transfer to production. Reference solutions are given in the next section for different types of manufacture.
