A great deal of carbon was deposited in the form of inorganic carbonates, and would not be involved in the carbon cycle gradually. About 21% 25% of carbon discharged from suspended particles and sediments was recycled. Mass spectrometric techniques for analysis of Th- U disequilibria were first developed to date corals for paleoclimate research (Edwards et al. 1987). Soon thereafter, workers at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANE) developed methods for silicate analysis by TIMS (Goldstein et al. 1989). Typical TIMS analysis of MORE requires 0.5 to 1 gram of material in order have an analyzable load of 100 ng of Th. TIMS analyses of U and Th last 2-3 hrs and produce a precision of 0.5-2% (2a). SIMS techniques for measuring Th isotopes have also been developed (England et al. 1992 Layne and Sims 2000). Analysis of Ra and Pa isotopes by TIMS was developed in the early 1990 s significantly increasing the sensitivity over decay counting analysis (Volpe et al. 1993 Cohen and Onions 1993 Pickett et al. 1994 Chabaux et al. 1994). [Pg.177]

A repetition of in situ experiments with the yellowhead wrasse, partially in response to the above criticisms, again showed that fish developed a learned aversion to otherwise palatable food that had been adulterated with 15P-PGA2 [99], This was presumably due to the emetic properties of PGA2. In a different arena, a new sunscreen is under development from chemical compounds produced by reef-building corals. Corals living in a reef cannot move about, and in shallow water they are continually exposed to the sun s ultraviolet rays. This radiation can be as harmful to corals as to humans, so it seemed likely that sedentary corals must somehow limit radiation damage to their bodies. Sarcophytols A (46) and B (47) are simple cembranoids isolated from the Okinawan soft coral S. glaucum and have been reported to possess potent inhibitory activities against various classes of tumor promoters.70 71 Sarcophytol A (46) mediated dose-dependent diminution of 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol 13-acetate (TPA)-induced transformation of JB6 cells.72 When evaluated for potential to inhibit TPA-induced JB6 cell transformation, several of the sarcophine metabolites (48 to 58) mediated inhibitory responses greater than sarcophytol A (46) or sarcophine (45), most notably 7a-hydroxy-y8(19) deepoxysarcophine (50), which was comparable to 13-cz s-retinoic acid. These studies provide a basis for further development of novel furanocembranoids as anticancer agents. [Pg.250]
