Coordination fashion

Normal cardiac contraction depends on the conduction of electrical impulses through the myocardium in a highly coordinated fashion. Any abnormality of the initiation or propagation of the impulse is referred to as an arrhythmia. These disorders are the most common clinical problem encountered by a cardiologist. There is a wide range of types of arrhythmias with multiple etiologies and a variety of symptoms. In this section, two types of cardiac tachyarrhythmias are discussed. The most common treatment for these conditions is drug therapy. [Pg.176]

The adduct formed by two lithium atoms with polycondensed aromatic hydrocarbons crystallizes with two solvating molecules of TMEDA. The structure of the crystals derived from naphthalene (73) and anthracene (74) was elucidated by XRD. This arrangement of the unsolvated lithium atoms, in 7 -coordination fashion on the opposite sides of two contiguous rings, was found by MNDO calculations to be the most favorable one for naphthalene, anthracene and phenanthrene (75) . [Pg.341]

The coordination of cilia motility is controlled by neural innervation, chemical pacemaking, and hormonal stimulation, and the effects of ions such as calcium and potassium. Cilia beat in a coordinated fashion to achieve the unidirectional propulsion of mucus with the frequency of the ciliary beat, which is dependent upon the environment. Human nasal cilia have been reported to beat, in vitro, with an average frequency of 10 Hz. Any rheological abnormalities in the mucus gel, particularly those that alter the elastic properties of mucus, can greatly affect clearance and undermine ciliary activity in the nasal cavity. In such circumstances, the adhesiveness of the mucus layer may allow it to remain in contact with the underlying cell layers and retain any substances introduced into the nasal cavity. [Pg.359]

The actions of neurotransmitters are mediated mostly through their interactions with receptors located either at presynaptic or postsynaptic sites. These receptors function in a coordinated fashion to elicit excitation (depolarization) or inhibition (hyperpolarization) within and between neuronal subsystems. A basic inadequacy in this interplay is believed to lead to pathologic states... [Pg.13]

The data available on the Indian POPs pollution scenario shows need for every concern. But the interest shown by the concerned agencies is very minimal for reasons obvious. The participation by NGOs and public is not encouraged in this critical issue. Effort by the scientific community is waning for want of encouragement and should be stimulated in a systematic and coordinated fashion. As a first step to this, available information on the existence of PTS, their distribution, transport and bioaccumulation in the Indian environment and biota should be gathered in a systematic manner. [Pg.476]

Radical cations derived from a variety of hexadiene systems constitute an interesting family of intermediates, since they are related to the potential mechanistic extremes of the Cope rearrangement. The electrocyclic reaction of a hexadiene radical cation has three mechanistic extremes a) addition precedes cleavage (associative mechanism) b) cleavage preceeds addition (dissociative mechanism) c) addition and cleavage occur in coordinated fashion (concerted mechanism). To date, radical cations corresponding to all three mechanistic extremes have been characterized. This illustrates remarkable differences between... [Pg.221]

Considering the special bioactive and biocatalytic functions of copper(II) carboxylate complexes,[9] along with the magnetic properties and various coordination fashions of Cu(II) ion,[10-12] we focused our work on the Cu(II) and H4btec system. Based on the layer structure of [Cu2(btec)(H20) -4H20] (1),[13] in which the Cu(ll) atom with bi-pyramidal configuration is coordinated by two monodentate carboxyl O atoms and three aqua molecules, part of the coordinated aqua molecules of Cu(II) is possible to be replaced by some bridging spacers, such as pyrazine, 4,4 -bipyridine (4,4 -bpy) and the related species, and to construct 2-D and 3-D open-frameworks with variable cavities and channels. [Pg.311]

Kwashiorkor is thought to involve "confused hormones," An adequate supply of carbohydrates, in the form of starchy roots or sugar cane, can result in maintenance of high levels of plasma insulin, which can prevent the net proteolvsis that otherwise w ould supply the liver and immune system with amino acids. The mechanism by which insulin controls muscle turnover is not well understood however, in marasmus the body s stores of fat and muscle are broken doiwn and mobilized in a more coordinated fashion, resulting in a relatively gradual decline in overall health. [Pg.243]

A number of enzyme systems have evolved in animals and plants which effectively convert lipophilic xenobiotics to more polar compounds that are efficiently excreted. Phase I enzymes, responsible for oxidation, reduction, and/or hydrolysis, are integrated with phase II or conjugation enzymes for reactions of both types and are normally required for the formation of products polar enough to be readily excreted. The intracellular level of these enzymes, and thus, the capacity for biotransformation, increases in a coordinate fashion in response to exposure to xenobiotic compounds. This response is... [Pg.311]

An electromagnetic wave has two components, electric E and magnetic H. The two components vary in a coordinated fashion with time, and they are orthogonal in space with respect to one another as shown in Figure 4.2. As the wave proceeds through space (and time) the electrical component E varies sinusoidally, and the magnetic component of equal amplitude H does the same, but the two sinusoidal waves are out of phase with one another by 90°, or jt/2. [Pg.79]
