Conventional machining

Conventional machining operations are used preferably from the same plastic to be used in the product (Chapter 8, SECONDARY EQUIPMENT). Different casting techniques are used that provide low cost even though they are usually labor intensive. The casting of unfilled or filled/reinforced plastic used include TS polyurethane, epoxy, structural foam, and RTV silicone. Also used are die cast metals. [Pg.178]

INDUSTRIAL SAFETY PROVISIONS. In the design of the APE and associated operational shield, conventional machine design practices are used to protect operators from hazards associated with moving parts. Proper techniques for guarding of hazardous machine areas are used, including the use of interlocks In the control system to prevent movements until certain conditions are satisfied, or to stop movements In emergency situations... [Pg.299]

For extensive survey topography, where the time taken on conventional machines would be prohibitive. [Pg.12]

Finally, metal objects can sometimes be fabricated in their entirety by electrodeposition (electroforming), with much the same considerations as electroplating. Conversely, portions of a metal specimen can be selectively electrolyzed away (electrochemical machining). This technique is especially useful where the metal to be shaped is too hard or the shape to be cut is too difficult for conventional machining. The sample is made the anode, a specially shaped tool the cathode, and electrolyte solution (e.g., aqueous NaCl) is fed rapidly but uniformly over the surface to be machined. Current densities may reach several hundred amperes per square centimeter across the electrolyte gap of a millimeter or so. Excellent tolerances can be achieved in favorable circumstances.16... [Pg.321]

Nevertheless, several issues have still to be addressed and improved, such as the ability of the solvent mixture to dissolve polar and heavy compounds, the entire washing and rinsing cycle to maximize stain removal, the machine s cost compared to the conventional machines. [Pg.648]

Particle Number Concentration and Size Distribution. The development of aerosol science to its present state has been directly tied to the available instrumentation. The introduction of the Aitken condensation nuclei counter in the late 1800s marks the beginning of aerosol science by the ability to measure number concentrations (4). Theoretical descriptions of the change in the number concentration by coagulation quickly followed. Particle size distribution measurements became possible when the cascade impactor was developed, and its development allowed the validation of predictions that could not previously be tested. The cascade impactor was originally introduced by May (5, 6), and a wide variety of impactors have since been used. Operated at atmospheric pressure and with jets fabricated by conventional machining, most impactors can only classify particles larger... [Pg.199]

However, since one electron or proton has two possible spin states, N electrons or protons have 2N possible states (just like the coin toss case). Molecules can be configured to be simultaneously in many different quantum states, just as the electron in the two-slit experiment seems to pass through both slits simultaneously. In principle, this property can be used someday to make massively parallel computers, and such computers with five or six bits have been made in the laboratory (using NMR). As of this writing, nobody knows whether or not it will ever be possible to build a quantum computer which is big enough to do a computation faster than a conventional machine, although it is clear that NMR will not work for this application. [Pg.124]

Conventional machine systems try to meet these conflicting demands by the separate optimization of screw geometries in the individual functional zones. However, the shear rate is similar in every zone, because the screw speed is always the same, and the self-wiping... [Pg.289]

While these examples illustrate the role of flow cytometry in bioprocess monitoring, the analyses have been conducted off-line thus making their use in bioprocess control impractical. Recently, a portable flow cytometer - the Microcyte - [148] has been described, which due to its small size and lower cost (compared to conventional machines) allows flow cytometry to be used as an at-line technique [149]. Ronning showed that this instrument had a role to play in the determination of viability of starter cultures and during fermentation. The physiological status of each individual cell is likely to be an important factor in the overall productivity of the culture and is therefore a key parameter in optimising production conditions. [Pg.104]

Several general lessons may be learned from this study. The kernel of the integrals code actually operates at approximately 30 times faster than the CDC 7600/ so that the non-kernel code, which takes about 10% of the computer time on a conventional machine occupies 60% of the time in our present CRAY-1 program. The implication is that work to vectorise the non-kernel components of the calculation might now be profitable. [Pg.18]

You can generate high magnetic fields because the wire that is carrying the current does so without any electrical loss, and you can pack a lot of current into a very small part of the machine. As a result, you generate a flux, or an intense field level, which may be three to five times as intense as in a conventional machine. So you get higher power density in a smaller space, and because you don t have the field losses, you get improved efficiency. [Pg.128]

The feasibility of miniaturizing thermal biosensors in different constructions, sizes and materials,by employing conventional machining and micromachining technologies could be further exploited in several directions. The miniaturiza-... [Pg.29]

The flexible structure can be used to machine metals by electrical discharge machining or polymers by conventional machining. The stiffness of the structure is controlled by the geometry of the four hinges. In the case of circular hinges the overall stiffness K is given by ... [Pg.161]
