Contract mining

Historically, the federal law applicable to contractor health and safety could be divided into two different categories. One set of principles governed contract mine operators. In contrast, independent contractors performing construction or services for the mine operator (rather than as the mine operator) were governed by a different set of rules as to legal responsibility and UabiUty. Whether those distinctions are still viable today remains to be seen, as discussed below. [Pg.229]

The price of lignite pet mined ton or pet heat unit is lower than that for higher rank coals. The market for all coals is primarily as boilet fuel for electric power production. Prices ate generally estabUshed by contracts between utiUty and suppHet before mining begins. [Pg.155]

A large number of diugs interfere with the smooth muscle contraction. These compounds lower blood pressure and are referred to as antihypertensive. In this section, only those coumpounds will be mentioned that have a direct effect on smooth muscle tone. Phenylephrine is an agonist on most smooth muscles and activates ax adrenoceptors. Carbachol is an agonist on some smooth muscles and activates contraction through muscarinic receptors. Blockers of the ax-adrenoceptors such as prazosin and urapidil are competitive inhibitors of the ax-receptor in vascular and bladder smooth muscle. Phenoxybenzamine is an ineversible blocker of ax receptors and phentol-amine blocks ax and a2 receptors. Ca2+ channel blockers such as the dihydropyiidines, phenylalkyla-mines and benzothiazepines lower smooth muscle tone by blocking the L-type calcium channel. [Pg.1145]

This work was supported by a contract from the Atomic Energy Control Board of Canada. The co-operation of mine management and personnel is gratefully acknowledged. [Pg.241]

Koppers-Totzek A coal gasification process using an entrained bed. The coal is finely ground and injected in a jet of steam and oxygen into a circular vessel maintained at 1,500°C. Reaction is complete within one second. The ash is removed as a molten slag. The process was invented by F. Totzek at Heinrich Koppers, Essen, and further developed by Koppers Company in Louisiana, MO, under contract with the U.S. Bureau of Mines. The first commercial operation was at Oulu, Finland, in 1952 by 1979, 53 units had been built. Most of the plants are operated to produce a hydrogen-rich gas for use in ammonia synthesis. Developed by Lurgi. See also PRENFLO. [Pg.156]

This research was partially supported by the U.S. Department of Energy, Office of Basic Energy Sciences, Division of Engineering and Geosciences, under Contract No. DE-AC03-76SF00098, and the U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines, under Contract No. J0145057. [Pg.401]

The first well-publicized incident wherein an LNG spill on water produced an explosive vaporization took place during the 1968-1969 tests carried out by the U.S. Bureau of Mines Safety Research Center in Pittsburgh (Burgess et al., 1970, 1972). Under contract to the U.S. Coast Guard, they were studying the spreading and vaporization rates of LNG on water. [Pg.117]

Much of the work discussed above was performed under contract awarded by the Canada Departments of Supply and Services and Energy, Mines and Resources to the Waterloo Centre for Process Development. Dr. J.T. Price of CANMET was the supervising scientist on these contracts. His active participation was very much appreciated. [Pg.327]
