Continuous indicators

A pressure sensor giving a continuous indication which is displayed on the control panel and can be observed by the operator. The sensor has a high pressure safety interlock set at a predetermined pressure that activates an emergency shutdown system.

LCA and CCK, on the other hand, appear to be strikingly dissimilar. All CCK procedures require at least one quasi-continuous indicator, and if there are none, the investigator has to create such an indicator (e.g., SSMAXCOV procedure). In contrast, LCA does not require continuous indicators and only deals with categorical data. In the case of categorical data, the patterns of interest are usually apparent, so there is no need to summarize the data with correlations. Therefore, LCA evaluates cross-tabulations and compares the number of cases across cells. This shift in representation of the data necessitates other basic changes. For example, LCA operates with proportions instead of covariances and yields tables rather than plots. These differences aside, the two approaches share a lot in common. LCA, like CCK, starts with a set of correlated indicators. It also makes the assumption of zero nuisance covariance-—in the LCA literature this is called the assumption of local independence, and it means that the indicators are presumed to be independent (i.e., uncorrelated) within latent classes. Moreover, LCA and CCK (MAXCOV in particular) use similar procedures for group assignment and both of them involve Bayes s theorem. 

Overall we recommend using LCA in conjunction with taxometric analyses. In most cases, LCA provides an excellent test of external consistency for CCK procedures. In order to apply both approaches to the same data, an investigator could do taxometric analyses with continuous indicators and then break them down to form a pool of ordinal or dichotomous taxon markers. 

A fleet of Ford Ecostar vans is now operating in the US and Europe, powered by 34 kWh sodium-sulphur batteries. There have been a number of incidents in which sodium-sulphur batteries have been destroyed by the exothermic reaction which occurs when sodium and sulphur react chemically. Despite this, field trials are continuing indicating that these problems may not be insurmountable. 

A different approach to threshold selection is based on fuzzy logic [14], By adopting this approach, the value that represents the crisp discriminant between faults and disturbances is replaced by a fuzzy set, characterized by a membership function. Hence, a yes-no decision is replaced by a continuous indication of the faulty level. 

Continuous indicators are tracked by looking at their mean and standard deviation over a series of tests/observations. For example, the noise level associated with our braking system was measured at a mean value of 34 Db with a standard deviation of 1.5.

The succession of current pulses is converted into a steady current, which is measured on a meter called a counting-rate meter, calibrated in such units as counts (pulses) per second (c/s or cps). Such a circuit gives a continuous indication of x-ray intensity. 

Optical sensors offer a number of advantages they are not susceptible to disturbances by electric fields, they are suited for continuous indication, and, during the measurement the sample remains chemically unchanged. On the other hand, they may be operated only in the dark, since daylight disturbs the measuring procedure. 

Coffee decaffeination with carbon dioxide has been the object of a large amount of effort in research and development at the Max Planck Institute for Coal Research in Germany and at other academic and industrial laboratories in Europe and the United States. An indication of the intensity of effort applied to this process comes from a review article that lists the United States patents on decaffeination granted up to the end of 1981 (Paulaitis et al., 1983a). Several earlier patents were inadvertently omitted from that list a corrected version is given in table 10.1. Research activity on supercritical fluid extraction of stimulants from coffee, tea, and cocoa has continued, indicated by the number of United States patents granted since that review article was published some of them are listed in table 10.2.

The unique featiu es of this apparatus not included in typical adsorption-measuring devices are the provisions for producing sinusoidal variations in system volume and for continuously recording the responding pressure fluctuations with time. System temperature also is recorded continuously with time while volume maxima and minima are continually indicated on the pressure versus time trace. The latter provides a continual record of system phase lags (994 s).
