Containment design engineering

Control system design engineer modern plants contain sophisticated control and trip systems and HAZOPs often result in the addition of yet more instrumentation.

The sulfur plant will also be impacted by minor constituents in the raw gas. Depending upon the primary conversion system utilized, the raw gas may contain sugnificant quantities of cyanides, ammonia, oils, and light hydrocarbons. Sulfur may be present in the forms of carbonyl sulfide, carbon disulfide, mer-captans, thiophenes, or other species. Design engineers should be aware of these species and their variability, in order to provide sufficient protection in the overall system.

Chemical reactors basically come in the form of tanks, such as for batch reactors or back-mix flow reactors, large cylinders, such as for fluidized-bed or plug-flow reactors, or multiple tubes inside a cylindrical container, such as for plug-flow reactors when special needs exist for temperature control. High pressure and extremes of temperature as well as corrosive action of the materials involved can introduce complications in the design which must be handled by the design engineer.

The commercial process simulators contain a range of distillation models with different degrees of sophistication. The design engineer must choose a model that is suitable for the purpose, depending on the problem type, the extent of design information available, and the level of detail required in the solution. In some cases, it may make sense to build different versions of the flowsheet, using different levels of detail in the distillation models so that the simpler model can be used to initialize a more detailed model.
