It is important to understand that any geophysical method which is successful at one site may or may not have the same success at another site. There are many variables associated with all geophysical techniques as presented in Table 6. Someone with the experience to know the limitations of each of the techniques should be consulted prior to developing a large geophysical reconnaissance program.

We will concentrate in the following on the design of foundations and equipment support blocks, since these are the civil items which are the most closely integrated with the overall plant design. Foundation design follows at its upper end from the plant layout and the loads and details of supported equipment and steelwork, and at the lower end from the design criteria produced by the geophysical consultant.

Most of the published papers on sediment transportation in open channels dwell extensively on the geophysics of canals and rivets. The field of open channel hydraulics is so vast and complex that the reader may have to consult various reference books such as Graf (1971). One subject of great interest to civil engineers is the carrying capacity of the channel for sediments. This is often termed the sediment load and is measured as a function of the flow rate, width of the channel, and sediment concentration. Using channels to transport soUds has limitations due to the fact that no pumps are used to force the flow.
