Azeotropic Distillation In azeotropic distillation, an entrainer is added to generate a new low-boiling azeotrope by changing the molecular interactions. The drawback is that at least one additional separation step is needed to remove the entrainer, which is recycled into the azeotropic distillation column. To ensure a simple separation of the entrainer, the new azeotrope should form two immiscible phases after condensation (heterogeneous azeotrope). For a homogeneous azeotrope, separation by extraction in combination with distillation is frequently needed. [Pg.106]

The way in which these factors operate to produce Type III isotherms is best appreciated by reference to actual examples. Perhaps the most straightforward case is given by organic high polymers (e.g. polytetra-fluoroethylene, polyethylene, polymethylmethacrylate or polyacrylonitrile) which give rise to well defined Type III isotherms with water or with alkanes, in consequence of the weak dispersion interactions (Fig. S.2). In some cases the isotherms have been measured at several temperatures so that (f could be calculated in Fig. 5.2(c) the value is initially somewhat below the molar enthalpy of condensation and rises to qi as adsorption proceeds. In practice, the taffy process is generally employed for only medium molecular-weight resins (1) (n = 1-4). The polymerization reaction results in a highly viscous product (emulsion of water and resin) and the condensation reaction becomes dependent on agitation. Finally, atmospheric chemical transformations are classified in terms of whether they occur as a gas (homogeneous), on a surface, or in a liquid droplet (heterogeneous). An example of the last is the oxidation of dissolved sulfur dioxide in a liquid droplet. Where Water Hammer Occurs. Water hammer can occur in any water supply line, hot or cold. Its effects can be even more pronounced in heterogeneous or biphase systems. Biphase systems carry water in two states, as a liquid and as a gas. Such a condition exists in a steam system where condensate coexists with live or flash steam in heat exchangers, tracer lines, steam mains, condensate return lines and, in some cases, pump discharge lines. [Pg.313]

In a 2-1. three-necked round-bottomed flask, fitted with an efficient sealed stirrer and a reflux condenser capped by a drying tube, are placed the dried anisyl chloride (Notes 2 and 3), 73.6 g. (1.5 moles) of finely powdered sodium cyanide, 10 g. of sodium iodide, and 500 ml. of dry acetone (Note 4). The heterogeneous reaction mixture is heated under reflux with -sngorous stirring for 16-20 hours, then cooled and filtered with suction. The solid on the filter is washed with 200 ml. of acetone and discarded (Note 5). The combined filtrates are distilled to remove the acetone. The residual oil is taken up in 300 ml. of benzene and washed with three 100-ml. portions of hot water. The benzene solution is dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate for about 15 minutes, and the solvent is removed by distillation at the reduced pressure of the water aspirator (Note 6). The residual -methoxyphenyl-acetonitrile is purified by distillation under reduced pressure through an 8-in. Vigreux column b.p. 94—97°/0.3 mm. 1.5285-1.5291. The yield is 109-119 g., or 74-81% based on anisyl alcohol (Notes 7 and 8). [Pg.51]

Atmospheric particulates (sea salt, carbonaceous soot, and sulfuric acid aerosols) are known to provide a condensed phase for conq>lex heterogeneous chemistry to occur. A low-pressure process has been developed by ICl operating at about 50 atm (700 psi) using a new active copper-based catalyst at 240°C. The synthesis reaction occurs over a bed of heterogeneous catalyst arranged in either sequential adiabatic beds or placed within heat transfer tubes. The reaction is limited by equilibrium, and methanol concentration at the converter s exit rarely exceeds 7%. The converter effluent is cooled to 40°C to condense product methanol, and the unreacted gases are recycled. To describe hypergolic heating, Anderson and Brown (A10) proposed a theoretical model based upon spontaneous exothermic heterogeneous reactions between the reactive oxidizer and a condensed phase at the gas-solid interface. In these studies, the least complex case was considered, i.e., the one in which the solid phase is instantaneously exposed to a stagnant (nonflowing) gaseous oxidizer environment.
