The nanocomposite concept appears to have its origin in pioneering research conducted in Japan by Unitika, Ltd. in the 1970s [1] and separatdy by Toyota Central Research and Development Laboratories in the late 1980s [2]. The theory was that if nanodays could be fully dispersed or exfohated to high aspect ratio platelets into polymers at relatively low levels (2-5 wt%), a number of mechanical and barrier properties would be enhanced. Foil balloons are derived from the effort of National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Space Command with the concept and technology to metalizate plastic sheeting.
