Computer home page

To access the Web, the Web browser is activated. Displayed on the screen will be the home page or starting point for entry into the Web. On this page will be a dialogue box into which you can type text. The dialogue box may ask for Address, Netsite, Location, or URL (Uniform Resource Locator). Web page address, which is usually in the form http //www—. The home page, with instructions on the use of the Web site, will then be displayed on the screen. One important feature you will note is that some words on the page are highlighted. If you click the mouse on one of these words (called hyperlinks) your computer will connect to another, related, Web page that provides information on the hyperlink. This feature greatly enhances the use of the Web because related Web sites are connected or linked together and may be quickly accessed by a click of the mouse.

Use the title found on the Web site itself add the words Home Page for clarification when needed. Data retrieved from Internet-based databases should include a data entry number. Stand-alone databases should be cited as computer programs (see p 323). 

The following protocol explains the application of the Lasergene and RasMol software in the Macintosh format. If you are using IBM computers, this protocol must be modified for use in the IBM format. The web is the most popular Internet application. It allows easy links to information and files which may be located on computers anywhere in the world. The WWW allows access to millions of home pages or websites , the initial point of reference with companies, institutes and individuals. Besides their own text and images, these contain hypertext links , highlighted words or phrases that you chck on to take you to another page on the same website or to a completely different site with related subject material. Certain sites specialize in such links, acting like indexes to other websites these are particularly useful. 

Expanding access to computers and networks represents a resource which should not be overlooked. There are two Universal Resource Locators that represent a sound starting point for obtaining safety related resources available on the internet. First, the full text version of the Biosafety in Microbiological and Biomedical Laboratories, 3rd edition, March 1993 may be accessed at http //www.cdc.gov/od/ ohs/biosfty/bmbl-l.htm. Another excellent starting point is the Occupational Safety and Health Administration home page at http // www.osha.gov, which allows access to multiple sources of information, as well as a listing of Safety and Health Internet Sites.

Analytical solutions and correlation equations are presented rather than graphic results. The availability of many computer algebra systems such as Macsyma, MathCad, Maple, MAT-LAB, and Mathematica, as well as spreadsheets such as Excel and Quattro Pro that provide symbolic, numerical, and plotting capabilities, makes the analytical solutions amenable to quick, accurate computations. All equations and correlations reported in this chapter have been verified in Maple worksheets and Mathematica notebooks.
