The State of New Jersey has passed a law restricting the sale and disposal of batteries (qv) containing mercury, requiring manufacturers to reduce the mercury content of each battery to 1 ppm by weight by 1995, and to estabhsh a collection program for spent batteries (14). It is useful in this sense to make a dear distinction between the conception of an element as a separate homogeneous substance, and as a material but invisible part of a compound. Mercury oxide does not contain two simple bodies, a gas and a metal, but two elements, mercury and oxygen, that, when free, are a gas and a metal. The most important mercury chalcogenide halides are of the type HgaYjXj (Y = S, Se, Te X = Cl, Br, I). The corresponding sulfide halides have been known for over 150 years (326). Mercury Recovery Services, Inc. (MRS), has developed the Mercury Removal/Recovery Process (MRRP) to treat media contaminated with mercury. The ex situ process uses medium-temperature thermal desorption to remove the mercury from contaminated wastes. Process wastes are heated in a two-step process to recover metallic mercury in a 99% pure form. Mercury may be present in air in different chemical states such as the elemental form (as a vapour or adsorbed on particular matter) or in the form of volatile mercury compounds (mercury chloride, methyl-mercuric chloride, and dimethyl mercury).
