Concentrations of about 15% of nonionic emulsifying wax are commonly used in creams, but concentrations as high as 25% may be employed, e.g., in chlorhexidine cream BP. Nonionic emulsifying wax is particularly recommended for use with salts of polyvalent metals and medicaments based on nitrogenous compounds. Creams are susceptible to microbial spoilage and should be adequately preserved. [Pg.815]

Compressed gas systems were originally developed simply to provide a means of expelling a product from its container when the valve was depressed. Perfumes, Flavors, Cosmetics, and Soap. Many naturally occurring esters in essential oils and some synthetic esters are important fragrance and flavor compounds (61,62). They are used in perfumes, flavors, cosmetics, soaps, detergents, and air fresheners. Benzyl, butyl, ethyl, methyl, and phenyl esters of benzoic acid are used as flavors, perfumes, and food preservatives. Glyceryl 4-aminobenzoate [136-44-7] and 2-ethyUiexyl 4-dimethylaminobenzoate [21245-02-3] are used in cosmetic sunscreen preparations. Alkyl esters of 4-hydroxybenzoic acid, called parabens, have been used under various names for fungus infections of the skin, and as preservatives in lotions and creams (101). Soap and cosmetic fragrances use large amounts of amyl and benzyl saHcylate. Benzyl saHcylate [118-58-1] is also used in deodorant sprays. 2-Ethylhexyl saHcylate [118-60-5] and 2-ethylhexyl 4-methoxycinnamate [5466-77-3] are used in sunscreen formulations (102). [Pg.396]

Cyclopropyltriphenylphosphonium Bromide (5). The lactone salt is pyrolyzed by placing it in a round-bottom flask fitted with an adaptor attached to a vacuum source (aspirator is sufficient). The flask is heated (oil bath) to 180-190° for 48 hours. The residue is a virtual quantitative yield of the tan product, which may be crystallized from ethyl acetate giving cream crystals, mp 189-190°. An alternate setup is convenient if a drying pistol (Abderhalden) is available. The compound is placed in the pistol, which is then evacuated. Decalin (bp approx. 187°) is refluxed over the pistol to provide the heating source. The work-up is the same. [Pg.109]

The effects of pH on electrokinetic velocities in micellar electrokinetic chromatography was studied by using sodium dodecyl sulfate solutions [179]. Micellar electrokinetic capillary chromatography with a sodium dodecyl sulfate pseudostationary phase has been used to determine the partition constants for nitrophenols, thiazolylazo dyes, and metal chelate compounds [180]. A similar technique was used to separate hydroquinone and some of its ether derivatives. This analysis is suitable for the determination of hydroquinone in skin-toning creams [181]. The ingredients of antipyretic analgesic preparations have also been determined by this technique [182], The addition of sodium dodecyl sulfate improves the peak shapes and resolution in chiral separations by micellar electrokinetic chromatography [183]. [Pg.274]

Situation A cream that contains two active compounds was investigated over 24 months (incomplete program if today s ICH standards are applied, which require testing at 0, 3, 6, 9, 12, 18, and 24 months). The assays resulted in the data given in file CREAM.dat. Program SHELFLIFE performs a linear regression on the data and plots the (lower) 90% confidence limit for the regression line. For each full time unit, here months, it is determined whether this CL drops below levels of y = 90% resp. y = 95% of nominal. Health authorities today require adherence to the 90% standard for the end-of-shelf-life test, but it is to be expected that at least for some products the 95% standard will be introduced. [Pg.246]

The UV-absorbing molecule in the first sunscreens was PABA, para-aminobenzoic acid. However, this compound may have toxic effects of its own.
