Melvin Mooney devised an instrument to measure the stiffness of uncured compounds, also known as the compound s viscosity. The unit of measurement is expressed in Mooney units. The identification of a compound only by its retention time is somewhat arbitrary. A better method consists of using two different techniques that are complementary. Coupling a chromatograph with a second instrument on-line such as a mass spectrometer or an infrared spectrophotometer realises these objectives. These coupled methods, often called hyphenated techniques, allow us to obtain two different types of information that are independent. Good understanding of a material balance and key component balances can give insights for maximizing desirable product yields while minimizing undesirable products. Material flows are measured for feed and products, which are usually available online. Component measurement can be obtained from online analyzers or lab tests for key components. Samples are taken daily on most towers and analyzed in the plant s local laboratory. However, these laboratories are typically setup to measure for certain key compounds and do not have the capability of measuring the full spectrum of multicomponents involved in feed. Therefore, unless the tower of interest has only a few components in the feed, a complete component balance will typically need special laboratory assistance, which more than likely will come from outside the local plant. In this case, be very careful with compositions and understand the units of measurements that are provided by the laboratory. However, the component balance could be difficult to obtain for hydrocarbon distillation towers due to the fact that individual components cannot be fully characterized. However, for most chemical and natural gas distillation towers, it is possible to establish individual component balances. [Pg.289]
