While necessary, the property measurements alone do not provide all the necessary information about the functionality of the seal material. However, material screening and evaluation using stack tests are not practical. In this section experimental techniques to evaluate the seal material in addition to property measurements are discussed. While discussions focus on glass or glass-ceramic composite seal materials, many of the techniques apply to other types of seal materials. [Pg.228]

Over the years, a large number of materials and approaches have been investigated for sealing of SOFC stacks. The best of these approaches have been successful in sealing the cells to acceptable leakage rates. Glass-ceramic and composite seals... [Pg.234]

Fibrids are film-like particles that are formed when aramid solutions are precipitated in a non-solvent under high shear [20,21]. The dimensions of as-formed fibrids are aronnd 100 mm X 700 mm x 0.01 mm. Fibrids have a high surface area, around 200-300 m /g, and can function as a thixotrope or a reinforcing agent in composite, sealing, coating, and elastomer applications [22,23], and also in aramid papers. [Pg.256]

Alkali metal glasses are successful in terms of thermomechanical performance, but possess severe corrosive action on the interconnects which puts a limitation on their applicability in a planar SOFC stack. The corrosion destabilises the protective chromia scale on the interconnect and hence affects the mechanical integrity of the stack. Nielsen and co-workers focused on the composite seals developed from the compliant glass (NAS—17.8 mol% sodium) dispersed with high CTE material such as MgO as MgO display slow crystallisation behaviour and desirable Tg values. Good adhesion between the NAS/MgO thin film composite glass composite with preoxidised Sandvik interconnect steel and (as received) Crofer 22APU is obtained at 950°C as shown in Fig. 6.3a, b. [Pg.222]
