Seals composite-ceramic

While necessary, the property measurements alone do not provide all the necessary information about the functionality of the seal material. However, material screening and evaluation using stack tests are not practical. In this section experimental techniques to evaluate the seal material in addition to property measurements are discussed. While discussions focus on glass or glass-ceramic composite seal materials, many of the techniques apply to other types of seal materials. 

The thermal expansivity of Ni—Fe alloys vary from ca 0 at ca 36 wt % Ni (Invar [12683-18-OJ) to ca 13 x 10 / C for Ni. Hence, a number of compositions, which are available commercially, match the thermal expansivities of glasses and ceramics for sealing electron tubes, lamps, and bushings. In addition, the thermal expansion characteristic is utilized ia temperature controls, thermostats, measuriag iastmments, and condensers. 

Therefore, a team, led by the University of Alaska-Fairbanks, was formed to study these practical issues (75), including the composition of the ceramic membrane, seals that would join the ceramic and metal materials, membrane performance, and development of a ceramic that would resist warping and fracturing at the high temperatures of the conversion process. 

Over the years, a large number of materials and approaches have been investigated for sealing of SOFC stacks. The best of these approaches have been successful in sealing the cells to acceptable leakage rates. Glass-ceramic and composite seals...

Effective sealing of SOFC components is critical for efficient and effective operation and metallic, metal-ceramic composite and ceramic based seals are not ideal [23, 24]. Glass based sealants are typically recognised to be the best candidate due to their excellent electrical, mechanical and chemical stability in both oxidising and reducing environments properties at high temperature [25].
