Sealing composition

An interesting application of sprayed aluminium is for resistance to high-temperature oxidation up to 900°C. The article is grit-blasted and aluminium sprayed, usually to a thickness of 0-008 in (0-2 mm). Copper alloys are particularly prone to attack by long-chain fatty acids which are often present in sealing compositions, temporary protectives and as trace additives in many plastics under acid conditions ester plasticisers may saponify in the presence of copper giving rapid corrosion of the copper and accelerating degradation of the polymer. 

In 55% of the cases, the accidents could have been foreseen by use of risk analysis, and in 35% of the cases by thermal stability testing. Sealing shells are mostly applied in insufficiently stiff and weakly loaded immovable joints. They are usually made as flat or hollow tubular seals fastened along the packed hole outline (lids, hatches, car and instrument bodies, doorway and window openings, etc). It should be emphasized that the introduction of Cl into sealing compositions is strongly advisable since this is found in the narrow gaps and clearances where the corrosion process intensity is the highest.

Construction Materials. Superabsorbent polsrmers are used to control liquid water in a variety of construction-related products. Joint-sealing composites are made by blending superabsorbents into chloroprene rubber (54) or into poly(ethylene-co-vinyl acetate) (55). These composites are used like mortar in the concrete block walls of the structure. Gaps left during construction are subsequently filled as the superabsorbent swells in any water, and subsequent leaks are prevented. A water-blocking construction backfill has also been developed from cement, water absorbing polymer, and an asphalt emulsion (56).
