Community building

In this chapter, we consider how to construct quantitative models of the dynamics of microbial communities, building on our discussion of microbial kinetics in Chapter 18. In our modeling, we take care to account for how the ambient geochemistry controls microbial growth, and the effect of the growth on geochemical conditions. 

The technology exists to solve the majority of these problems, but the solutions require skills unavailable in the Thiid World community. Building the capital systems common in developed countries is beyond the resources of Third World countries. Provision of effective technologies that use some of the techniques discussed in this book could be useful in this regard. Our laboratory, in part, is dedicated to this pursuit.

Civil engineering is often called a people-serving profession. Virtually all that makes up our physical communities - buildings, highways, airports, bridges, and sewer and water systems - were designed and constructed by teams of engineers and contractors for the communities and people that live there.
