Table 7.1 shows the construction of a typical activity chart using one of many computer spreadsheet packages. The cross (-F) identifies an activity in the plant and stars ( ) in the vertical lines denote where access to other activities is needed or an interrelationship exists. A wide scattering of the stars away from the diagonal line of crosses indicates large distances between the activities and thus large communicating distances. [Pg.74]

A feature of PC spreadsheets is that the position of rows or columns can be changed at the touch of a key, so the sequence of the rows of activities can be rapidly altered, and the position of the columns varied to preserve the diagonal pattern of crosses. This exercise can be executed a number of times to reduce the scatter of the stars away from the diagonal line and reduce the communicating distances between the activities. This has been carried out, and the result is shown in Table 7.2, where it can be seen that the stars are clustered more closely around the diagonal line. The purpose of the well completion is to provide a safe conduit for fluid flow from the reservoir to the flowline. The perforations in the casing are typically achieved by running a perforating gun into the well on electrical wireline. The gun is loaded with a charge which, when detonated, fires a high velocity jet through the casing and on into the formation for a distance of around 15-30 cm. The most important appHcation of fiber-optic laser-based communication is in long-distance telecommunications (92,93). Fiber-optic systems offer very high capacity, low cost-per-channel, light weight, small size, and immunity to crosstalk and electrical interference. [Pg.16]

However, optical fiber communications are not useful only for long-distance communication links. Fiber-optic data links are also used in a variety of short-distance systems, for example in computer—computer links and for internal communications on ships and aircraft. These appHcations include many of the shorter-distance communication links, such as the automated operation of all the environmental controls in a large commercial building. Fiber optics can replace copper wire at a savings in space and cost for many of these appHcations. [Pg.17]

In summary, laser-based fiber-optic telecommunications has had a revolutionary impact on long-distance telephone communication and is now expanding into many new appHcations areas. [Pg.17]

Flare noise (roar of combustion) is the most serious because it is elevated and the sound carries. The flare can be located at a remote distance from the operating unit or surrounding community. Noise of steam injection into the burner can be reduced by using multiple no22les. Furnace noise from air intake, fuel systems, and combustion blower forced draft/induced draft (FD/ID) fans can be reduced by acoustics. The plot plan should be evaluated for noise generation and to find the means of alleviating or moving noise to a less sensitive area. [Pg.83]
