The lUBMB Commission on Nomenclature has issued a number of recommendations dealing with areas of a more biochemical nature (72), such as peptide hormones (86), conformation of polypeptide chains (87), abbreviations for nucleic acids and polynucleotides (88), iron—sulfur proteins (89), enzyme units (90), etc. The Commission has also produced rules and recommendations for naming enzymes (91,92). [Pg.120]

Inspection Authority The National Board of Boiler and Pressure Vessel Inspectors is composed of the chief inspectors of states and municipalities in the United States and Canadian provinces which have made any pari of the Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code a legal requirement. This board promotes uniform enforcement of boiler and pressure-vessel rules. One of the board s imporiant activities is providing examinations for, and commissioning of, inspectors. Inspeciors so qualified and employed by an insurance company state, municipality, or Canadian province may inspect a pressure vessel and permit it to be stamped ASME—NB (National Board). An inspector employed by a vessel user may authorize the use of only the ASME stamp. The ASME Code Committee authorizes fabricators to use the various ASME stamps. The stamps, however, may be apphed to a vessel only with the approval of the inspector. [Pg.1022]

Fig. 6.1. IUPAC-IUB Commission on Biochemical Nomenclature rules defining residues and peptide units in peptides. In the example shown, residue No. 2 contains the backbone atoms N2, C2, and C2. Peptide unit No. 2 contains the backbone atoms C2, C2, and Nf. Rj, R2, and R3 are the side chains of the amino acid residues (www.chem.qmul.ac.uk/iupac/AminoAcid/). Fig. 6.1. In 1976, the lUPAC Commission on Macromolecular Nomenclature published rules on the nomenclature of regular single-strand organic polymers. These were later revised [1]. A regular single-strand polymer is one which can be described by constitutional repeating units with only two terminals composed of one atom each. [Pg.318]

Textile definitions most generally accepted for reference in the United States are those standardized by the American Society for Testing Materials and published in ASTM Standards on Textile Materials (W, 25). The Federal Trade Commission has also established definitions for use in enforcing its Trade Practice Rulings 20). These may differ from the ASTM definitions—for example, the ASTM restricts its definition of wool to the fiber from the fleece of the sheep, whereas the Federal Trade Commission defines it as the fiber from the fleece of the sheep or lamb or hair of the Angora or Cashmere goat (and may include the so-called specialty fibers from the hair of the camel, alpaca, llama, and vicuna). ... [Pg.174]

The new EU Directive was the subject of a dispute that occurred in early 2002, especially with the United States. According to official spokesmen, the US was ready to launch a trade war over European plans to label all GM food. The European Commission considers that it has now fulfilled its commitment to create conditions for restarting the authorisation procedure for GMOs (thus avoiding being sued by the US under WTO rules). Companies must now decide what products they want to put on the market, and member states are responsible for initiating the authorisation procedure. [Pg.111]

Several countries have been given restrictions on the use of compounds because of potential toxic effects in humans. In the European Community, the use of tris(2,3-dibromopropyl) phosphate (EC Directive 76/769/EEC) and tris(l-aziridinyl)phosphine oxide (EC Directive 83/264/EEC) in textiles has been banned. In 1977, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission banned the use of tris(2,3-dibromopropyl) phosphate in children s clothing (ICPS, 1995). The European Community has also banned the use of PBBs in textiles (EC Directive 83/264/EEC). Several countries have either taken or proposed regulatory actions on PBBs. In addition, controls on the emissions of dioxins and furans from municipal solid waste incinerators have been implemented in the United Kingdom under the Environmental Protection Act (1990). Germany has developed rules for the maximum content of selected 2,3,7, and 8 substituted polychlorinated dibenzo-pura-dioxins and dibenzofurans in products. Recently, the European Commission has issued a proposal to ban the production and use of PentaBDE. In U.S. A., on the other hand, there are currently no regulations on PBDE production or use. PBBs have not been used widely in Europe and also in U.S.A. the production of the main mixture, hexabromobiphenyl (Firemaster BP-6), ceased in 1974, after the Michigan disaster. ... [Pg.1206]

The head of each such department, agency, or unit shall comply with such rules, regulations, orders, and instructions of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission which shall include a provision that an employee or applicant for employment shall be notified of any final action taken on any complaint of discrimination filed by him thereunder. Another joint activity was a united address to Dutch government in 1912 on the rules with respect to patent agents, together with the engineering society KIVI. A joint commission was installed that prepared alternative regulations for patent agents. These were sent to Dutch government in 1916, but the action did not have the desired effect. ... [Pg.214]
