False-positive results with bDNA have been observed with proficiency testing specimens for HTV-1 in the College of American Pathologists HIV-1 viral load survey and HCV in the viral quality control program administered by the Netherlands Red Cross. The reason for the false-positive results with these proficiency testing specimens is not known but may be sample matrix effects. The extent to which this problem occurs with clinical samples has not been determined. However, both the HIV-1 and HCV bDNA assays were designed to have a false-positive rate of 5%. [Pg.215]

The way in which accreditation is organised varies in different countries with organisations such as the Clinical Pathology Accreditation (CPA UK) in the UK and CCKL Test in The Netherlands. Accreditation may be optional or may be mandatory, as in the USA, and mediated by deemed authorities such as the College of American Pathologists. However, the standards to which these accreditation bodies operate are usually cross referenced to internationally agreed formulae such as ... [Pg.10]

Although multidimensional separation generally offers enhanced selectivity and discrimination of solutes, application of more than one hyphenated techniques is usually required for complete and unequivocal identification of the analytes. A recent report states that two widespread misconceptions about mass spectroscopy (MS) are that GC-MS is a specific method and tlrat GC-MS is 100% accurate (5). The 1989 Forensic Urine Drug Confirmation Study by the American Association for Clinical Chemistry/College of American Pathologists confirmed this concern about overreliance on GC-MS as a confirmation method (5). [Pg.722]
