In 1951, the American College of Surgeons were joined by the American College of Physicians, the American Hospital Association, the American Medical Association, and the Canadian Medical Association to create JCAHO as it is known today. The Canadian Medical Association has since withdrawn from JCAHO however, they continue a process similiar to the current JCAHO. The governing body is made up of 28 members with a diverse background in health care, business, and public policy. Members include nurses, physicians, consumers.
