Cold Duck is a blend of white and red sparkling wines. It probably originated in the Middle States, and the flavor of Concord grapes is predominate, or at least recognizable. For this reason, some California producers import Concord grape juice or concentrate from other states for use in this product. [Pg.92]

Two brands of sparkling wine are marketed, and the types include white, pink, burgundy, and Cold Duck. Bottle sizes are 187 mL, 375 mL, 750 mL, and 1.5 L and are made at an adjoining glass factory. The 750-mL bottles weigh 0.26 oz. Plastic stoppers are used as closures for the 375-mL and 750-mL size bottles. See Figure 13. [Pg.114]

For most medium uses cotton fabrics give the best service. Wool and woven metal coth is also used. For ordinary cold work an 8 to 16-oz. duck or its equivalent in other cotton fabrics will show the best results. Other things being equal the more open the fabric the better the filtration results. If a little cloudiness in the filtrate is not objectionable it is better to equip the filter with an open fabric, preferably of medium weight if the greatest possible capacity is desired. [Pg.294]

We should not forget ecological applications. A duck s feathers are not wet-table by water, but if we spill surface active molecules, such as are found in washing-up liquid, into our rivers, the surface tension of the water is reduced. The following examples must serve as representative of a story genre that still continues, albeit in more subdued form since the end of the Cold War in 1989-90. In on-column injection, the sample is injected in a solvent directly onto the column. The sample is concentrated by "cold trapping" or a "solvent effect" at the head of the column, so must be injected at a column temperature near the boiling point of the solvent. The column inlet does not have a septum but rather a "duck-bill" valve, made of a soft elastomer. This consists simply of two plastic surfaces which are pressed together by the pressure of the carrier gas in the injection port. During injection, a needle of fused silica is merely slipped between the two surfaces and is guided into the top of the WCOT column. (Some commercial systems use a more complex solenoid valve). [Pg.33]

Piarda. According to Grelier (153), while all the Piaroa (De aruwa) hunters knew how to make the poison, only a few were considered expert. Several Strychnos species were used, and the soil in which the plants grew and the time of collection (at the end of the dry season) were believed to be important factors in ensuring the quality of the product. The Piaroa emphasized that it was the fibrous inner bark of the stem that had the poison in the most concentrated form they tested a sliver of it on a frog before selecting the material to be used, which was then carefully decorticated on the spot. The extraction was carried out with cold water, and this was followed by filtration and concentration over a moderate fire, which could take 24 hours or more, until it became a thick, syrupy paste. While still hot, it was poured into small calabashes about the size of a duck s egg. The poison—the curare fuerte of the Piaroa—solidified to a brittle resin which had to be moistened before it could be coated on the darts. [Pg.31]
