Wonder Woman

When my doctor realized that I was extremely sensitive to mold he told me to go back to Colorado where it was drier. As soon as I was strong enough to sit, I got on a plane and went to Colorado, rented a room in the house owned by a wonderful woman named Ruth who led an MCS support group. She said she s never seen anyone as sick as I was, and she helped me a lot. But her house was so moldy that I got even worse and had to sleep outside. That was the start of living outside on and off for four years because I never could find housing that didn t make me worse. I had such a hard time in Colorado that I don t care if I ever go back to that state again. [Pg.79]

The person I admire most is my sister. I call her Wonder Woman. A professional who copes daily with the most stressful and potentially depressing situations, she is the strongest person I know. [Pg.86]

Since tales of potential atomic disaster drew heavily from biblical archetypes regarding the end of time, they resonated on a multitude of levels. Indeed, from 1945 to the present day, atomic-themed comic book adventures have never lost their appeal. In his lengthy list, Robert Beerbohm counted over 180 such tales from 1953 to 1989. From Donald Duck to the Gumps, from the Flash to Green Lantern, from Superman to Wonder Woman, it would be hard to find a cartoon character who did not confront nuclear themes. The following examples must serve as representative of a story genre that still continues, albeit in more subdued form since the end of the Cold War in 1989-90. Whether one looks at humorous or serious stories, the atomic theme is ever present. [Pg.122]

Yes—no—yes, I have found it. But not your sort of Heaven, he said, and I wondered how he knew what Heaven was to me. Not even on Rhodes with the Knights Hospitaller, which is the nearest I have come to crusade. Nor the sort of heaven men seek with the nearest wench. He shook his head, as if impatient with himself. I spoke foolishly, for I do not look to find Heaven on earth again. .. I have a wife, and she is well enough. But... Perhaps you heard. There was a woman I loved. ... [Pg.123]

In December 1997, when the idea for this book was in its infancy, I saw Elizabeth Schuster s name and address on a list of new subscribers to an MCS newsletter. The listing caught my eye because she lives near my mother. Out of the blue I called Elizabeth to ask if I could interview her when I came to spend the holidays with my mother. She was the first person interviewed for this project, and I have since marveled at that good fortune. I found Elizabeth to be a woman of wonderful peace and grace. Hearing her story reconfirmed my belief in the healing power of stories, and strengthened my resolve to see this project to completion. [Pg.19]

In Florida I was asked to leave campgrounds where I d paid the fees, and I ve been told by a police officer that he would have to arrest me if I was living in my car. But one time in Arizona a woman came up to me and asked if I was living in my car. That s not an easy question for me, and I m not particularly friendly if I m asked by someone I don t know because of my experiences. But this woman said, I lived in my car for a while and I had the most wonderful time of my life. She looked like a normal, healthy woman, and well-dressed. I don t know what her story was. If I d been friendlier she probably would have told me. Maybe she had been camping, and had the resources to protect herself. But it was nice to see this woman and to hear her appreciation for the positive benefits of my current way of life. [Pg.184]

Poor Mona, I don t believe she was half as bad as she made herself out to be, an certainly from that day to this I ve never heard a complaint or a murmur cross her lips. She s been sick, too, most all the time, an there s been many a day when she d ought to be home in bed but off she d go an stand on her comer an peddle her apples because the old woman that lived with her was sicker than she an they wouldn t have no money, come rent day, unless Mona went out an earned it for em. Talk about the heroes that done such wonderful things that folks has to write whole books about em I tell you what, child, there s many a hero hid away in the dirty little side-streets and alley-ways of every big city only folks don t know about em. To my mind, Mona was one of them heroes so sweet an patient, pretty well on in years herself, an all crippled with the rheumatism, but goin out day after day to sell her apples a slavin an a killin herself for a woman a little older an a little sicker than she was. An all this because the old woman had been kind to her in her hour of greatest need. [Pg.27]

The parade is a wonderful excuse for a woman to send off her child and servants so she can be alone to receive a lover. [Pg.32]

However, one is bound to wonder whether this was a direct reaction to levonorgestrel or a stress reaction to the absence of menstrual periods. Like many other users of Mirena, this woman had amenorrhea associated with facial flushing and pustules conditions such as urticaria, eczema, pompholyx, and erythema multiforme occur cyclically in some women in the second half of the menstrual cycle, irrespective of contraceptive use. [Pg.292]

I could see no way to bring the conversation around to wineglasses and poison. I wondered how I could lure this bell tower of a woman and her so-trusting husband to Ca Barbolano so that the Maestro could interrogate them for himself. She was still galloping ahead of me—... [Pg.63]

Twelve heads nodded. Angel looked them over with cool satisfaction. She signalled to the driver and the Sleipnir s engines fired. As the vehicle trundled under way, Angel made her way to the front and strapped herself in, thinking. She couldn t help wondering why Razum had chosen to send her on this mission because he trusted her so absolutely, or because he didn t trust her to sit in on his audience with this Doctor She wondered too about the Doctor. Who was he What did he want from Razum And who was the woman in the painting he had carried into the War Room ... [Pg.113]

And he wondered what it would be like, to have a woman like that. Her empathic mirror amplifying and reflecting their passions back and forth with every heartbeat every kiss, touch, caress a spark to fan the flames. Feelings spiralling higher and higher, until they might never come down. [Pg.215]

We will now proceed to show you something wonderful concerning this mysterious figure of the sun-crowned woman of Revelation, who is nothing more nor less than the perfected type of the Virgin of the World, the Queen of Heaven, which certain sects foolishly and ignorantly bow down to, and yet, understood, this Woman will be found worthy of all adoration. (She is,... [Pg.66]
