Lipid nutritional supplements have been in use before the term nutraceutical was coined. Products such as fish oils, shark cartilage, shark liver oil, and vitamins have been in the market since the beginning of the twentieth century. Some of the health claims of these products lacked strict scientific documentation in the past, and their curative properties were mostly anecdotal. However, today there is a better understanding of the biological properties of lipids and their application has extended to combined pharmaceutical and cosmetic fields such as disease prevention and treatment, excipients and coadjuvants, frawi-dermal carriers, and skin emolliency agents. This has led to the development of bioactive cosmetic and pharmaceutical products whose name has recently been coined as cosmeceuticals. [Pg.3369]

Presently, the term generally refers to the detrimental effects of higher plants of one species (the donor) on the germination, growth, or development of plants of another species (the recipient). Allelopathy can be separated from other mechanisms of plant interference because the detrimental effect is exerted through release of chemical inhibitors (allelochemicals) by the donor species. The term "Allelopathy" was coined by Molisch (2 ) to refer to both detrimental and beneficial biochemical interactions anong all classes of plants, including microorganisms. Because the root word "pathy," however, implies detrimental interactions, Rice (3) defines "allelopathy" as follows "Any direct or indirect harmful effects of one plant (including microorganisns) on another through the production of chemical compounds that escape into the envirorment." Many of the new insecticidal chemicals are complex organic materials with long and complicated names. There is need for simple common names. Without simplified terminology costly losses may result from relatively minor errors in nomenclature. Coined names must be protected if they are to remain available for general use, and must be defined with sufficient accuracy to assure that a standard product will be marketed. Selection of such names requires cooperative consideration by many agencies. Chemists can make important contributions to this undertaking. [Pg.11]
