In addition to end-on attachment, there is also side-on attachment of rod-like molecules onto GNPs. Through laterally substituted thiol, the rod-like nematic LC molecule 10 containing a lateral alkyl thiol was linked to GNPs together with some other /2-alkane thiols forming a mixed monolayer (Scheme 4.3), which had two components in nearly equal proportions (ca. 1 1) on GNP surface (Fig. 4.6). Both the hexane- and dodecanethiol coated hybrids GNPs exhibited nematic LC behavior which displayed typical marbled or Schlieren textures (Fig. 4.7) [55].

There is a hybrid product available which has a veneer back, a layer of PF-coated wood particles, core veneer cross-ply, another layer of wood particles, and a top veneer. This assembly is pressed into a panel, trimmed to size, and sold into the stmctural-use panel market where it competes with plywood and oriented strand board. 

Hybrid Circuits. The use of parylenes as a hybrid circuit coating is based on much the same rationale as its use in circuit boards. A significant distinction Hes in obtaining adhesion to the ceramic substrate material, the success of which determines the eventual performance of the coated part. Adhesion to the ceramic must be achieved using adhesion promoters, such as the organosilanes.

Acryflc coating powders have achieved some success in Japan utilizing resins having gflcydyl methylacrylate functionality cured with C q—0 2 dicarboxyflc acids (49). Hybrid polyester—acryflc coating powders have also been reported in which an acid functional polyester resin coreacts with a glycidyl-containing acryflc polymer (50). Hydroxyl functional acryflc resins cured with blocked isocyanates have also been available for many years in the United States and achieved some commercial success as appliance finishes. 

The distribution of powder coating sales by resin type for various geographical areas is given in Table 5. The polyester—epoxy hybrids account for 50% of the European market, yet have only market share <25% in the rest of the world. Similarly, the polyester urethanes, which account for only a small market share in Europe, find significant usage in the United States andjapan. AcryUcs hold a significant share only in the Japanese market. 

Numerous protective conformal coatings are also used ia the hybrid circuit iadustry. Most of the criteria that pertain to use ia ptinted wiring also apply here (4).
