Coatings hybrid polymer

Hybrid polymer silica nanocomposites formed from various combinations of silicon alkoxides and polymers to create a nanoscale admixture of silica and organic polymers constitute a class of composite materials with combined properties of polymers and ceramics. They are finding increasing applications in protective coatings (Figure 7.1), optical devices, photonics, sensors and catalysis.1... [Pg.160]

This section reviews studies on the synthesis of fine particles coated with polymer brushes by surface-initiated ATRP. SiP are among the most extensively studied particles for the application of surface-initiated ATRP [85-93]. Patten et al. first succeeded in the surface-initiated ATRP of ST and MMA on two SiPs with average diameters of 75 and 300 nm [85,86]. Several groups investigated the synthesis of hybrid SiP with different monomers. Maty-jaszewski et al. synthesized an initiator-functionalized SiP with a diameter of... [Pg.34]

Polyoxometalates are important catalysts but they are also finding application in optical, electrical, and magnetic devices. Mixed-metal polyoxometalates with vanadium(V) in the polyoxoanion core confers enhanced properties to such structures, principally in their ability to form essentially infinite networks that can be utilized as coatings or as other thin film materials. Additionally, these materials have tunable electromagnetic and photochromic properties. In combination with organic polymers, so-called hybrid polymers, special electrochemical properties are conferred, making possible such electrical storage devices such as capacitors and batteries that utilize the redox properties of the polyoxometalate [7],... [Pg.217]

In this book I have confined discussion to those polymeric materials which are cured by chemical reaction and which have found widespread application in the construction industry. As such, the book covers materials based on epoxies, polyurethanes, silicones, polysulphides, alkyds and polyesters. In addition, there is a chapter on hybrid polymer systems and one on acrylics. It is true that acrylic emulsions are not strictly thermosetting polymer systems, but their widespread use and importance made their exclusion difficult. These materials find use as coatings, sealants, adhesives, grouts, flooring compounds, repair compounds and waterproofing agents. [Pg.3]

Several other polymers such as polyurethanes, alkyds, acrylics, polyesters, silicones, etc. can be hybridised to improve the performance or to obtain desired end-results. The growth of hybrid polymer technology is giving rise to considerable improvements, and many hybrid systems have been introduced to the market. Most of the work reported in this field is for coatings, but at the same time it is useful for other products used in the construction industry. Research is under way by many polymer manufacturers and universities, and innovations are continuously being reported. In this chapter we shall be dealing with those combinations which are useful, or may be useful, for the construction industry. [Pg.196]

Metallic pigments reflect infrared radiation and hence are able to reduce the heat emission from a surface coated therewith, according to Kirchhoff s law 1-/J(A.) = e(X,), where R = reflectance and e = emissivity. Hybrid polymers are superior to commercially available binders, considering both miscibility with IR-reflective pigments and the achievable degree of filling. However, in order not to affect the optical function of the pigments, the infrared absorption of the binder should also be as... [Pg.647]

While the hybrid polymer principally forms a coating on the textile fibers in the described concept, it should be noted that additional mechanisms may increase the coating adhesion to certain polymers. In the case of synthetic polymers, such... [Pg.419]
