Rayon. Viscose rayon is obtained by reacting the hydroxy groups of cellulose with carbon disulfide in the presence of alkali to give xanthates. When this solution is poured (spun) into an acid medium, the reaction is reversed and the cellulose is regenerated (coagulated). [Pg.1015]

One report (13) describes the procedure for spinning dry asymmetric ceUulose acetate fiber with a bore skin. Such fibers are spun in a modified dry-spinning process in which a volatile Uquid (methyl formate) is used as the ceUulose acetate solvent. The bore coagulating Uquid is isopropyl alcohol, which is subsequentiy removed. The advantages of these dry fibers over most ceUulose acetate membranes are that they can be stored dry, they are wet-dry reversible, they can be sterilized and packed dry, and they are ready for use without removal of preservatives. [Pg.153]

Makeup. Makeup treatment depends extensively on the source water. Some steam systems use municipal water as a source. The reversible addition of sodium bisulfite to carbonyl groups is used ia the purification of aldehydes. Sodium bisulfite also is employed ia polymer and synthetic fiber manufacture ia several ways. In free-radical polymerization of vinyl and diene monomers, sodium bisulfite or metabisulfite is frequentiy used as the reduciag component of a so-called redox initiator (see Initiators). Sodium bisulfite is also used as a color preventative and is added as such during the coagulation of crepe mbber. [Pg.150]
